Favorite WI Bodies Of Water

If you were limited to only fishing 2 WI bodies of water, which 2 would you choose & why? Notice I said bodies of water. Anything is fair game – trout streams, flowages, Great Lakes, border waters, farm ponds, etc. Just thought it might be fun to talk about favorite lakes & share opinions.

    O.K., I’ll start –

#1 – Green Bay – I only get to fish this body of water a handful of times each year, but I love this place (even a Viking fan can appreciate the fishing this place provides). Reason for this choice is the sheer number of fish one catches in that 23″ to 28″ range, with chances to stick a real pig. My buddy got one there in May that was in that 32″ range. I just wish it was about 2 hours closer (or more). Also some nice smallies up there.

#2 – Lake Menomin – Main reason for this choice is it’s proximity to home. I can fish here every day if I have time. Menomin can be a challenging lake at times and is sometimes tough on people new to the lake, but is a good multi-species fishery. This lake has a fair number walleyes in it. I can honestly say “I” have never caught what I would consider a trophy ‘eye on this lake, but some have. There are quite a few “nice” ‘eyes out there. Good bass lake with both large & smallmouth. Decent numbers of fish & size of the bass. Wish it didn’t get so green. Oh well, when the lakes like pea soup, that usually means less competition for the hot-spots!!!

Great post….#1) Lower Long Lake near Bloomer is by far my favorite place to fish. It is a chain of 3 lakes (Hurd, Dark, and Long). 11 years ago my Organic Chemistry professor took a few of us there to do some tip-up fishing for eyes and was hooked ever since. I started fishing it in the summer and had nothing short of phenominal walleye and smally fishing. The walleyes run small and there is a slot limit and reduced bag limit due to spearing, but the shear number of flags or fish caught makes it fun. Now onto the main reason I fish Lower Long… the huge smallies. They put a 1 fish over 18″ limit on the lake awhile back to keep it a trophy fishery and to control the rusty crayfish infestation. I caught and released a certified 6 pound smallie and generally catch one over 4 on most trips. The rusty crayfish did a number on the ecosystem by destroying the vegetation, but with the smallies it is kept in check and now I’m seeing panfish come back.
#2: L. Wissota is my second, but due to my move to River Falls I don’t fish it very much with the exception of a few tournaments. Trying to learn the lakes and rivers around here. It has and excellent walleye and smallmouth fishery, especially up the chipp. Good dock and rock lake.

    Boy…………..I dunno!

I’d have to say Yellow. The Big Yellow, Little Yellow, and Yellow river chain. Check the Amery area post and you’ll hear why! It’s one of the most relaxing/rewarding fisheries I’ve ever encountered!

Long Lake in Chippewa Cty. I hear there’s better smallie lakes, but very few………can’t put my exacting finger on it, but I just really like that lake!

I taped one of Roland Martins shows about 3 years ago and he was fishing a central WI lake catching smallies with senkos, if not mistaken it looks like long lake.

I couldn’t remember if it was Winkleman or Martin that was there but I know the lake gets pretty good attention. At the same time, I think it can be challenging enough that some guys start opting for other waters………….pretty clear on Long.

Only 2 Coot, you are a tough one to deal with. Pool 4 and Menomin would be my choices. The eye bite stays constant on both. Like Coot stated, Menomin is a good multi-species lake.

I would have to pick the lake where my in-laws cabin is, it’s Lower Pine Lake, in Polk County. Nice deep lake, crystal clear water, a little too much recreational traffic in the summer, but all in all a nice lake. Fish aren’t huge, but you rarely get skunked, and with the DNR heavily stocking the lake with trout, it’s become a lot more interesting.
The second would be Bone Lake near Luck WI. I’ve only fished a few times, but everytime, this lake has produced. Caught my first muskie there last summer. Accidentally of course.

Hey everyone, this is the duck, Muduck that is. I would have to say that my 2 favorite would have to be the Cedar river in the Rice Lake area and big chetak in the birchwood area. The only closer sure thing would be a hot date with a girl from Wisconsin, AND I MARRIED ONE!!!! These waters give up every thing from muskies to gills, I have had some of my best smallie and eye days ever also.

Excellent choices. I would love to try out Long Lake for the smallies.
My favorite 2 are the Flambeau River and the St Croix.
The Flambeau for the sheer beauty, no traffic and multiple species. It’s primarily a canoe river. Not hardly any fishing pressure. I usually fish out of the Park Falls/Fifield area. I’ve caught walleye up to 25″ (my personal best) trophy muskie, smallies up to and over 5 lbs., northern pike, sturgeon, and monster cats.
St Croix because it’s 6 blocks from my house and a wonderful multi-species fishery.
