I will be up near Mountain camping in a couple weekends and I was wondering if there are any smallmouth streams in the area that I would be able to wade. I see that the Oconto and Pensaukee rivers have smallmouth, but would I be able to wade either of them? I’m not looking for specific spots or anything, some general info. If you’d rather not post specifics feel free to send a PM.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Great area, my folks had a cottage in Townsend on the flowage a number of years ago. Lots of lakes up there that are just gems. I know there are smallies in the oconto further downstream towards the bay, but have not fished that far upstream. Have fished in oconto falls on the pond and have done quite well in the fall when the smallies move down. Would be interesting to see what you can do on the upstream sections. Keep us posted. Hopefully someone on here will be more helpful than me.

Thanks for the reply Nic. Do you know if I would be able to wade the Oconto that far upstream? I don’t have a boat/canoe so that’s all I got. Also do you have any pointers on where to go? I see the headwaters are near Wabeno. Is there a bridge near there where I could park?

    Thanks for the help!

My family has a place near mountain actually some of the property borders the river. You can wade the river but there are tons of obstructions and it can get deep in some spots. I have never caught a smallie in the area. Trout yes, chubs… lots, suckers… yep. I have never caught a gamefish beyond trout in the Oconto around Mountain. Good luck.

Thanks for the info cspierings! Guess I won’t have much chance catching many smallmouth there. Do you know of any other rivers in the area that I would be able to wade and catch a few smallies?

    Thanks!
