Kris and I just came home for the week-end. We got up there Monday and set up camp and was on the water later that afternoon. It was tough for a while to figure out the walleyes. Once we found’em it’s been pretty steady action on plain hook worm rigs, leeches and plastics. I’ve been tossing a few white curley tailed grubs and lite blue B-fishin ringeys with fair results. The big problem there is the 18″ slot on ‘eyes. We’ve fished all week with out a keeper. In the real world we’d had walleye dinner every nite. Panfish are getting set up for their boy-girl thing and can be found in the warmer shallows. Leeches and slipbobbers have been working well, and I also have unlimbered my flyrod for a ton of fun with the little guys. We’ll be headed back up sometime Sunday or Monday morning. It’s been fun! jerr

well you should or could catch some bass.. what a great body of water.. You name it, this chain has it.. Deep water. moderate water, shallow water.. Largemouth, Smallmouth. Muskies.. Walleyes.. a giant eagle’s nest..
deep weeds, rocks and humps.. shallow slop..
a house to die for..
just a real neat, neat place..
I wish you well and hope that you tear them UP!!!
June 6, 2009 at 9:41 am #782004I rolled a smalley one day that looked about the size of a garbage can lid. She made 2 passes and followed the curley tail to the boat. Thursday nite league had 2 that were in the 5# range. It IS a great chain of lakes. jerr
June 6, 2009 at 10:06 am #782007Fished it often in the past. Unbelieveable amount of structure to be fished. A very fun lake to fish and a wide variety of fish to be had.

No muskies in this lake, and no muskies in the chain of lakes at all. You must be thinking of some place else.
Walleye action has been good. I have been jigging 30 feet of water and catching tons of fishJune 6, 2009 at 11:49 am #782026Quote:

We fish the Red Cedar a lot, a 2 years ago, while launching the boat at Waldo park, we had to wait for a diver to clear the launch area. He had a balloon thing that floated on the surface so that people could see where he was. He sort of rummaged the bottom of the lake not far from shore to find odd things, and take photos. He showed us a short movie clip that he took that afternoon of a female muskie that charged him from the weed bed just off the launch ramp..it was time and date stamped, so I don’t think it was something he made up.
I’ve never actually seen a muskie in the lake, but I don’t doubt that there could be a few in there.
just my 2 cents.

June 6, 2009 at 11:12 pm #782053well not to disappoint you.. but like 1980 or thereabout, the lower lake yielded the biggest musky caught in the state THAT YEAR..
I know because I was fishing right there and one of the guys from the bass club that I belonged to at the time, helped the guy carry it up the hill.. and it took two hands to reach around the tail..
and I had a major bite off and some harmungous beast rip the crap out of my buzz bait trailer that was 8 inches long on that day..
Yes there are Muskies in the lower lake.. BIG ONES..
June 6, 2009 at 11:23 pm #782056Its like Balsam, Red Cedar and Hemlock.. and the lower lake.. way down to where the creek or river starts at the Lower end.. that far down.. is where the Muskies were that day..
does that guy from Mcdonalds still own that house on the island in the middle of the lake?
what a great house.. unbelievable. Lost a big fish right on that island.. BIG FISH..
what a phenomenal body of water. My favorite place to fish inland in the state of Wisconsin..
June 7, 2009 at 12:36 am #782073If you’re talking of the guy that owns the house on the island just north of Stout Island, I think that’s a guy from down around Menomonie that owns it. There’s another in Hemlock that I’m not familiar with. The one on Cedar hasn’t been used much and the vandals have been tough on it. Pretty sad! In its’ day it must have been a beauty. jerr
June 7, 2009 at 4:47 am #782107the two times I have got to fish it this year, both days where 30+ wind days and difficult staying on spots to work baits and stuff, I wish I could fish it on a calmer day, that would be a blast.

June 7, 2009 at 11:26 am #782142Red Cedar is a quality fishery with so many different fishing style opportunities. This is 1 of my favorite lakes in this area.Being able to run so many different styles of presentations to put fish in the boat makes it a top fishing spot for many anglers. The lake receives a ton of fishing pressure, thus the 18″ size limit for walleye!Numbers are high for the lower teenage fish & letting them grow to the over 18″ mark will hopefully make this a more self sustaining lake. With the efforts of Walleyes For Tommorrow in conjunction working with the local DNR.They co-operatively generally capture adult fish strip spawn on-site to a portable hatchery & try to release around 3mil.walleye fry to the lake annually. This was unable to happen last year(2008) due to the VHS scare, forcing the DNR to basically stop all hatchery efforts to keep from spreading this unwanted disease.I hope to see some other form of slot limits placed on this body of water along with a few others local lakes that have been receiving alot of pressure as the numbers come up on the better sized reproducing fish.On a different note I seen a smaller lake in the area this winter become practically decimated because of wreckless caring of our resources.A low baitfish population with a good population of 20″-30″+ walleye that were very hungry allowed some anglers to easily overharvest a quality(Golden)walleye fishery to levels that had the DNR scratching their head wondering what happened!People going to a smaller lake & taking home fish in the mid 20″-30″ range repeatedly,as the fish are really biting, I wouldnt call good fisherpersons,or sportspersons .The term (Fish Hogs)comes more to mind .We as true sportspersons need to keep in mind of our consumption limits & practice selective harvest, letting the bigger fish swim to see another year of reproduction .We have our resources & our childrens future to have a decent opportunity for catching quality fish to look out for.Practicing selective harvest & CPR is just my way of assuring my childrens future might look bright.Sorry if I hi-jacked this thread & going off on a rant.Best of luck fishing all. Possibly see you somewhere in the northwoods! WHITE TIP
August 24, 2009 at 7:45 pm #800009I fished this lake for a couple of hours yesterday. fantastic! had a 3 lb LM and a few scrappy smallies and this was with no idea of where to fish!. going back in October with a game plan. can’t wait.
September 30, 2009 at 2:57 am #529963i have a few things I would like to try this weekend. any tips would be appreciated. cold cold cold!
October 1, 2009 at 5:06 pm #443906postponed trip due to the fact that there will be up to 1/2″ rain and 25 mph winds thru weekend. going up next weekend.
to be honest I don’t fish lakes often and never in the fall. what techniques do people like this time of the year? deeper water, shallow water? green weeds? weedlines?
live bait? any help would be appreciated.bigpikePosts: 6259October 2, 2009 at 4:56 am #494245I have had good luck fishing the weed beds/ edges and rock bars at night with cranks on a steady retrieve for LM SM and walleye, find a pattern and go to another section of the chain with the same cover and there will be more…Good luck.
