Was wondering if anybody could turn me on to some decent largemouth lakes up here in W Central WI. I had a blast casting scum frogs on a couple of lakes in the Hayward area last year. Was wondering if there aren’t a couple closer to home. Please feel free to drop me a PM. I promise I won’t blab about them on the internet!

With work and family demands most of us have less time to get on the water and need good information. With catch and release as well as just plain boater sense I’d say we can all share timely information.

I’d start with the Balsam Lake area, lots of very nice smaller lakes that dont get the tournament pressures that Balsam gets.

Some very nice larger lakes i like to fish are Wapo and Big Round. Dont ignore the Apple River flowage lakes around Amery.

I’ve heard the A.R. flowage is a good spot. Will have to give that a try. Balsam looks good too. I drive by it a lot. just never fished it.
    Hey Slider,
if those lakes have some smallies too I wouldn’t be opposed to that. I spend so much time on the St Croix I thought I would branch out a little. Nothing like a largie blowing up some lily pads to get at that frog or moss boss.

Depends on how far north. but Squaw Lake, and Balsam as you have already mentioned. Half Moon is just a few miles north of Balsam. I have a cabin on Big Blake and caught about a dozen this weekend. Nothing big though. I did fish Big Round on Saturday and caught about 2 dozen trying for walleyes. Most were around the 14/15 inch mark. Nothing big yet. Crnaks and Mimic minnows with the spinner. Cedar Lake has plenty in it as well.

Cedar Lake outside of New Richmond has some decent largemouth in there plus some bonus smallies as well. Squaw lake is also a little lake that has some quality fish.

If you want to go a little ways, Bone Lake has numbers of big fish.

Or, if you really want to stay close, Malileou right in Hudson has some pigs.

Forgot one more. Though Deer lake has lots of muskies it has plenty of smaller ones as well as a few really nice ones.

Before I go through my notes, how far do you want to travel. Are you looking after work trips, day trips, 2 day weekend trips??
