I have an outing to Pipe Lake this weekend, east of Big Round, north of the old pink bar on HWY 8. I am thinking it’s Polk County, but I’m not 100% sure. Anyone have any tips/techniques to try this time of year? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

It’s a fishing contest with the fishing club that I’m in. Any game fish counts for points/money, so I am after whatever is gonna be the easiest to get. I prefer to fish walleyes, but from what I know of the lake, that might not be in the best choice. I really need to improve my third place standing, with only three contests left this year! I am open to any suggestions you would have. Thanks!

Bass would be the best choice on this lake. I have not fished it much, but all the lakes up in this area now are going very well with topwater presentations. Throw a popr of skitterpop in open water close to weeds, and use a weedless slop bait in the thick stuff, especially in the morning. If panfish count, you could get a load of bluegill just about anywhere out there, good luck, and let us know how you did

Panfish count, as the contest is open to all gamefish and “scored” on a point system, most points wins. Therefore, a 1# sunfish would beat the pants off of a 3# walleye. My guess is that if no one gets into the big northerns, it will likely be a sunfish that wins.
Thanks for the tips, I’ll try them out and let you know how I do!

WEll, this post is being made by the winner of the Happy Hookers Fishing Club 2003 Pipe Lake Fishing Contest! The captain of the boat with the best point total too boot! We started the day on some nice looking, but mostly unproductive, cabbage beds. Numbers of fish, but none big enough to weigh. Then we trolled some weedlines and rocky drop-offs and didn’t do much there, either. We tried throwing topwaters, cranks and spinnerbaits up to the lilypads, and picked up a few. But the magic spot turned out to be a rocky point that came out from the shore, 12 feet deep with 20 feet on either side. We anchored on top and had a heyday with the smallies, and an occasional largemouth. My winning fish was a 2.25# smallie. Not exactly a record-breaker, but good enough for the $$ and the plaque! All told, we probably had 50 fish in the boat from 6:30 AM to 1:30 PM: smallmouth , largemouth , pike , bluegills , and rock bass . Anyway, all in all it was a great day on the water, and it’s nice to have a place to brag a little!

Anchored on top off the point, ran all the lines about 11 feet down. Suckers and leeches. Got most of the fish on top of the point. We also let the bobbers drift off over the deeper water on either side and off the end, hoping for some off-structure suspended walleyes or pike, but none materialized. The area seems like it would be even better toward evening.
Some of the guys brought in some bluegills and crappies, but nothing real impressive.
