Dodge Boy, I and another friend went to fish one the state’s research lakes which is open to fishing for all species. Two days ago I did really well catching pre, post and spawning walleyes. All fish can be kept, but all fish must be reported back at the station. Currently you can only keep one walleye over 28″ and muskies over 34″. Since the inception of that project they have only had one fish at 27 1/2″. Two days ago I caught a dozen walleyes up to 17″, yesterday was a bit brighter and made it a little tougher to hook up. We did get 7 or 8 ‘eyes though up to that 17″ mark again. It is just great to be pitching jigs in the shallows and watching your line jump when they smack the bait!!!

Dodge Boy did get this nice 32″ musky on a jig though!!! Nice to get the big net wet!!!

Nice job gentlemen- Sounds like a neat body of water to fish. Do you need any special permits or anything?

You need to check in when you arrive and when you leave to let them know what you caught and released as well as kept. There are 3 or 5 lakes in the deal and you just have to let them know where you are fishing and what you catch. We actually got checked last night by the DNR warden. I told him that I would see him up at Trout after the opener as he usually patrols that area. More later!!!

    Wats:

I was supposed to hear from him today regarding fishing the Wisconsin River in Rhinelander. Both he and another guy ended up not going, so I went to Tomahawk and caught a few little walleyes. Water temp today on Mohawksin was 54 to 58 depending on how far to the north you got. Largest ‘eye was 14.5″ and was dropping eggs!!! Still got to pitch jigs at ’em!!!

Hoping to get down to Tremp. next week to try to fill my turkey tag, but it may only be Sat. night and Sunday. Then back down the following week to my friend’s wedding. Staying Thursday night thru Sunday and bringing the boat for sure the 1st week of May!!! That will be the latest I have ever fished the river, I think!!! Even though ‘eyes and saugers will be the target, am hoping the white bass might put on a show for us that weekend.
