Looking to find a nice lake in the West Central WI area that I can launch, do some fishing, find a nice picnic spot (park with a bathroom would be excellent), etc. to take the family to this weekend… I live in Hudson and am looking for something (other than the Croix) within a hour or so. Any suggestions?

I hear ya on that one! Wissota is excellent and I was planning on heading over there tomorrow, unless I found something a bit closer to home.

One nice thing about the park is that you can access the beach/picnic/party/potty area by boat, and avoid the entrance fee. There’s a nice deep mooring area in the yellow river arm, just upriver from the swimming area, that you can pull up to. Unload your picnic goodies and enjoy!

There is also a very nice city park on Lake Menomin, on the east side. Double wide launch with parking, bathroom facilities, lots of shoreline for shore fishing, and at least one big pavilion for picnicing. IF you need directions, scroll down through some of this year’s posts on Lake Menomin…Don Hanson put together a set of very useful directions. Don has a recent report on Menomin fishing too. Sounds like the eyes are starting to go again!

Haven’t yet tried Menomin… would be a tad closer than Wissota. What’s your take on Tainter? Last time I was in that area, Tainter was very green – has the cooler temps knocked the algae down a bit?

Both lakes green up in the summer. Haven’t been on Menomin this fall yet so I can’t tell you how that lake looks.

Don’s report has a couple of pics that make me think that the lake is in pretty good shape. If it is still green, this weekend’s winds will push much of it to the north end, and the southern end may be pretty good by Sunday.

If Don sees this today, maybe he’ll chime in with an update.

Menomin has cleared up pretty decent. The bite has been decent also. Jigs have been my best producers fishing the breaks into deeper water. I have not been on Tainter yet this fall.

Hey Don… thanks for the update. Might have to give Menomin a try. Feel free to PM some GPS coordinates to me .
