Lake Altoona Fishing Report

I was able to get out on Lake Altoona for the day on March 1st. I first made a trip to Gordy’s Hardware Hank to get some bait and then out to the lake I went. I started fishing at about 10:30 AM.

I fished in 13 FOW. I fished an area known as Flag Point. I started off using some small crappie minnows on a plain hook under a slip bobber about 12″ off of the bottom on one pole and on my jiggin pole used a yellow and green jig, until I lost it and used a couple of other different ones tipped with a waxie. The waxie didn’t work well so switched to minnow heads. The action was slow, but steady. The bites on the waxies were very light. If it wasn’t for my Aqua View Camera it would have been tough to have known if I had a bite. The pole with the minnows I didn’t get that many bites, but when I did they hammered it. I found the smaller minnow the more bites also, not just from smaller fish either.

I ended up catching 15 perch total. I kept 8 of the bigger ones. I let most of the big females go…need them to keep stocking the lake. I have heard many reports that the fish aren’t biting out here, but I haven’t had a problem catching any. Here is a few photos for you.

In the first picture are the fish I caught.

Here is a picture of the jigs I switched to after I lost the before mentioned jig. I also noticed by using a minnow head on these I caught more than using a waxie.

The “old timers” do know what they are talking about.

In this last pic, I have the two bigger ones of the day. One was 12″ the other 13″. They do have some nice perch in this lake.

I saw everyone at your little shanty town removing their shacks…The only one left on Thursday was Mohr’s right? I noticed quite a few going off the past couple of days I was out there.

    Nice report Krisko!

Here I thought the only place a guy can catch perch that size was Mille Lacs!

Trust me there are some nice ones out there. This lake has always been called the “Dead Lake” and make it sound like there isn’t any fish. You have to find what works and go with it. I’ve had no problem cathing fish there. I sure would like to get on Mille Lacs and Winni to catch those nice perch too!

Nice perch indeed. Last time we were there we could see them on the Vex but they weren’t biting. We did catch one that just slammed the bait and a gill. I think that camera might just be the ticket. We are heading up to Winnie this weekend and hopefuly we catch a few up that way.
