Reports of large perch from lake Altoona, how big? How about 12+”, On the east end of the lake in 4′ with jigs and crawlers or slip bobbers, Dells pond is producing huge crappies along with walleyes and pike in the stumps. Personally I saw two 45+” muskies on in the Chippewa river, The walleyes are snapping on jigs and minnows and K-grubs, also I am catching perch up to 11″, get out NOW and get it done!

    Hi bigpike,
Thanks for the report. My son and I have been having success on the Chippewa river near Caryville. The walley and
northerns have turned it on w/ the cooler water temps(53-54). We’ve found some spots 10-12 FOW and just out of main current flows to be best.
    Have a great fall fishn’

i’ve been out on Altoona a couple times within the last 2 weeks and have been making a killing on those perch. The smallies are really picking up too, with an occasional eye here and there. I’ve been using jigs tipped with fatheads and its been a constant bite so far. We should find a time to get out there and maybe learn a few new spots/tricks that will help put those 14+ in the boat.

What??? Crappies in Dells Pond? Perhaps I need to rethink my fishing plans later this week. What depth and type of baits?

    Gotta get fishing!

The 10 fish limit for those hogs should go a long way for the Altoona fishery, you still get a good meal of fish with plenty left over for others…. The walleyes I’m catching on the Chip are in 10′ also off a current break, I must have caught over 50 the other day. One guy I talked to caught a 27″, 25″ and 24 ” last week, he limited out in about 2 hours of nice fish between 16-20″.

Just curious about what part of the chipp you’ve been fishing? I usually end up at the old NSP where the EC meets the chipp and its just started to turn on these last few days.

Been out the last couple mornings and the fishing has slowed a bit, still catching a few keepers and more smallies but not what it was last week, I think I will try to see if I can catch a few of those big perch from Altoona…

Hit Altoona the last three days, the first day was the best, I started out trolling 1-3′ diving rapalas in 4′ of water and the smack down was on, I caught Perch-zilla topping out at 13-3/4″. A number of these sows I caught were between 11-14″. I had three poles going and had a number of doubles and one triple, I managed to land all three! Color didnt seem to matter, I trolled at anywhere from 1-2 mph. The next day I got geared up to do it again only to find the cold front moving in a little earlier than excpected. The fish were much smaller and not as active. Off to the deep cribs I went. This was quite productive for crappies and smally’s. I even caught a bullhead. There was a guy fishing within ear shot of another crib, and after talking to him he was catching nice gills on waxies. So today I went back out and tried this, the fish are a little more finnicky but they are there to be had. I had a great time! With some stable weather I hope to get out and fish these perch again soon If I figure out how to load up pictures I’ll send out a shot of perch-zilla

If thats all your interested in that may be true but if you like fish Altoona is a great close place to fish, fishing has to be timed right to catch fish here, I dont even bother fishing it mid winter, late ice would be the time to get back after the huge perch, mid summer can be pretty slow also, fall and spring, early and late ice is prime time if you like to catch fish instead of a buzz

I have to agree, this lake you have to hit right or be in the right spot. This is my first year ice fishing it and I’ve done great. I’ve caught some really hawg crappies and only a couple of perch. I can’t wait for the spring….

Altoona is a good lake early and late ice but in mid season I have found it to be no good. I have caught some very nice perch out of there have had some alright luck with crappies and northerns. There are walleyes, Muskies, small and large mouth bass in there too never had much luck. Have had some great luck on bluegills this year on early ice but not much latly.

    Good luck

Yeah nothin is really happening now. Mike, another buddy and I put out tip ups and got nothing on Sunday.
High levels of spilled beer seeping through the ice getting to the fish maybe?

I’ve talked to a few guys who are regulars and live very close to this lake, they told me once the guys start driving trucks on the ice its game over til the thaw, they said you can actually see the fish go down as a truck/car aproaches, also the trick to the lake is the main channel edge, either the top of it or the bottom of it, the cribs and brush piles near shore. Those four places are it on this lake, kinda simplified but if you look at it that way its just a matter of putting in your time and asking about presenations or figuring out your own, these guys catch lots of walleye this way and lots of perch. I started catching nice perch this fall and have yet to tackle the eye’s but I’ve seen and heard enough to spend more time on this lake at the right times another thing to consider is this is the last year of the draw down so now the habitat will only improve like it has on Wissota, in a few years this lake will produce gils like Wissota is starting to!

One guy I know has his shack right in the channel and he got five northerns on rattle reels in a day, so yeah, the channel is a good spot to be.
