fished Moose Labor Day weekend. I had fished it once before but had forgotten what a nice piece of water it was.
The water in that area is incredibly low as brooktrout had warned me. The owner of the resort took me out the first night and showed me several cribs and more importantly the rock bars and submerged hazards we had to avoid. I’m positive it saved me a lower unit as some of these rock piles are as little as 6″ below the surface. Probably not much of a factor when water is normal. I was told it was down almost 2 ft from normal.
The fishing was slow. Got some crappie and small walleye.
Bonus was a 38″ ‘ski that hit my tube the last eveing we were there. I was vertically jigging stumps for bass when it hit. Luckily I had it hooked in the side of the mouth and he couldn’t get his teeth on the line. Quite a tussle on a 6 1/2’ med/lt rod and 8 lb test. Of course we didn’t have a camera along! Pretty fish and I’m sure Moose has a wonderful supply of these great fish. If you get up to the Hayward area please use exteme caution when on unfamiliar waters. The muskie are starting to move up there as the water temps are slowing falling into the 60’s. The big fish bite is just around the corner!
We stayed at the Mystic Moose just off Cnty Rd S. I highly recommend it if you are looking for first rate accomodations. Wonderful owners and a great place to stay.
