I just moved to the area to attend school. Can anyone give me some advice on fishing close to town? I noticed the Wis river is right here and it is damed up to the north and south. I live for bass fishing especially smallmouth and fish lots of tournaments back home. Any suggestions on landings close to town? I can find maps of the two reseviors but where do I find a map of the river right in town? Where can I find info on tournaments? Really any info would be greatly appreciated. I need something to do after my classes

Hi Eric, I hope you find all the info you need to check it out. I would start by hitting up any bait stores in the area. Just ask for the info. I’m not sure what stores are in the area but I’ve found that the people that work in the sporting goods sections of stores like Fleet Farm, WallMart ect know the area as far as fishing spots, and boat launches. Another good place for information is the WI.DNR . They can be a big help and may have just the map your looking for and there usually free. The DNR will also know where all the launches are and of any special rules or regulations and also of any hazards in the area. I hope this posts helps you out. I’ve also heard that different schools have fishing clubs and some even have classes on fishing. Check out what classes are offered and maybe with some luck fishing 101 on the river will be offered then contact that teacher. I have a niece starting this year at Point. Good Luck and keep us posted. Steve

I grew up in the Stevens Point area. Went to College there as well. I havn’t fished the Wisconsin in more than 10 years. I used to realy get the Smallies below the point dam though. I picked areas and floated in my canoe. I understand that every year the river just keeps getting better.
Go east on 10 to Fremont for some great Fall Walley action. It is a great fishery and also very fun to boat on. Lots of small lakes east of Point. Lake Emily, Lime Lake, Sunset Lake, Spring Lake, Lake Thomas to mention just a few. I’ve caught a lot of fish in all of them.
There was a PE prof that did a flyfishing class every year. Take the class for an easy credit and pump his brain for Wisconsin River Hotspots.
My Cousin always goes to the Dubay Dam and fishes down from there a little. He never goes hungry.
I’ll try to remember a couple hot spots and PM them to you.

Spending most my time in northern MN I haven’t done that much flyfishing for trout. So I am going to try some of that. I do have two fly rods (3/4 weight and 7/8) that I use for bass/panfish. I also tie my own flies. Any suggestions on trout streams?

Great troutstreams in the area. Get involved with the Frank Hornberg Chapter of Trout Unlimited and you will get all the info you could want. There are a few Profs from the CNR involved in that chapter as well.
