Due to past request, I’m not at liberty to speak of the water I was on but I’ll say that it was a Polk County lake and the crappies and gills are still holding to the deeper edges of the weeds but if you troll a small flu-flu style jig, tipped with “something”, the crappies are slammin’ it!

Anchor at a ledge drop and toss a small fly out. The Blue Gills will come all the way to the surface if they want it bad enough! I was casting the fly, letting it drop, and then slowly retrieving. As I’d approach the surface, I’d see how many followers I had. Rarely did they bite on the retrieve. However, a quick “roll cast” put the fly on the surface, just above them, and the race to see would get it first was on!!! YeeHawww!

This is my first year toting a fly rod along with my other stuff and I do believe I am hooked for life! No “itty-bitty’s” on the fly. All palmers and strong fighters! This lake is usually known for it’s “itty-bitty’s” so this was eye opening!

Anyway, I figure many other lakes in the area must be similar to temp and ecosystem so I thought I’d share what I found yesterday. Trolling…….. crappie bonanza! Fly……. blue gill thrill!

Hit something with these techniques this evening before the weather changes tomorrow. I’ll bet you find a good time!
