The Hex hatch, as we call it here in my neck of the woods near the Wisconsin/U.P. border is really heavy right now. Most species gorge themselves on these flies or emerging nymphs. It slows down the bite profoundly.
I took a couple of young guys out with me last night fishing on the Menominee River. We managed to fool a few Smallmouths by throwing tiny Raps and twitching them on the surface. They disgorged dozens of these big flies as they were brought to the net. The Walleye fishermen I talked to at the Landing had no luck. I would say it will be about another week before they are finished.I wonder if this is the case in other areas?
