My buddy Kyle Allen just got back from $30K ice tourney held on Pelican Lake last weekend. Kyle says there were over 1,200 lines in the water with payout down to 50th place. Tourney based on biggest single fish. Cost: $50 per fishing hole. According to Kyle total catch is as follows:
1st–4 oz. perch
2nd–3.75 oz. walleye
3rd–3 oz perch
4th–2.99 oz. bullhead
5th–2.80 oz bluegill
ONLY FIVE FISH CAUGHT ALL DAY WITH 1,200 LINES IN THE WATER!!!
This event was sponsored by local recreation assn. to promote the great fishing on Pelican Lake. Kyle talked to organizers who reportedly told him they held event in portion of lake with low fish population because they didn’t want to deplete the resource!
Imagine telling the wife that the family vacation is gonna be on Pelican this summer ’cause you wanna chase trophy bullheads….”and if I get one over four ounces, it’s going on the wall, dammit!”
This event generated attention far and wide…But is it really the kind of press you want if you’re a resort owner?
Had a chance to go. Glad I had a gig at Knute’s in Orfordville for the radio station on Friday and a chance to catch brown trout on L. Michigan Saturday.
If you’re wondering where to go for fish in southern Wisconsin, Knute’s is the place–a two piece walleye dinner weighs more than the entire tourney bag on Pelican, plus you get potato pancakes and slaw!
