Hey guys! I could use a little help. I have a buddy of mine who doesn’t get to do alot of fishing. He has talked me into talking him on a short fishing trip(3or4 days) this Aug. I would like to put him on a lake with a large population of catcable pike. Size isn’t a big issue. He would just like to catch a bunch of pike. But a chance at a large pike would be a bonus. Any ideas of where I should take him in Aug.? Thanks in advance!

The great lakes in western Ia have a good population of pike I know that when we have had sept walleye tourneys over there I have ussually caught a decent amount of pike from 3 to 10 lb with a bonus musky here and there

I’ve heard that the Iowa Great Lakes have some good numbers of pike and I thought about taking him there. But…..I have also heard the pleasure boating traffic is terrible and my buddy really would like to take an out of state trip. Thanks for the idea though.

Hey ducksfor me, if you don’t mind about a 4 hour drive give Jarrad (flick) fluekiger an e-mail, hes one of the guides here on the site. When we fished with him 3 years ago the local talk at the restaurant there in Alma was that above the dam, lock and dam 5, in lake Pepin there were good numbers of large pike. He’s a good guide and he’d know where the pike are. Hire his services for a day and fish by yourself the next few. If your going for 3 to 4 days its worth the drive and the price of his advice!

Thanks mossydan, I certainly don’t mind a 4 hour drive. We used to go to Wilmar Minn. Every year for a 3 day trip. That’s 7 hrs. one way. May have to give Pepin a thought. Thanks for the advice mossydan!

Well, if you really dont mind putting on the miles I would suggest Upper Red Lake, Waskish,MN. There is some monsters in that lake that I have heard of and the slabs there are phenomenal. I personally dont fish em myself but have seen a few come through the ice and have heard its a great pike lake.

If you decide on Lake Pepin shoot me a PM. I can put you on a few spots with some dandy pike.

Heck, if you come up here you might want to schedule your trip around the GTG. You can stop in and meet your fellow IDA’ers and share some BS stories and some suds.

That sounds good to me. When is it? Is there a thread that I could read some more info? Thanks!

It looks like it will be on Saturday, July 23rd. The GTG has always proven to be a great time. There will be threads on it in the coming months. You can do a search using keyword 2004 GTG and check out some of the pics from last year’s event. It was a great time. We have a informal fishing contest and then share a great meal and talk the evening away.
The end of July should be a good time for some nice pike too. As the water warms the pike tend to stack up in various areas and get really aggressive making for a fun day of fishing.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
