I’m new to the trolling bite so this being the first time using planer boards. My question is if i use a walleye diver that runs 6-8 feet how much line should i leave from the board to the lure.Does it matter at what depth the lure runs,is how you determine how long the leader has to be?

When trolling with deep divers and boards, you let out however much line you must let out to get the lure into the target depth. You then clip on the board and let the board out whatever distace you want from the boat. Hope this helps.

    Kevin,

I would suggest you first by a Precision Trolling book. Available at Gander Mountains and Fleet farms. This book will help you with dive curves for almost every trolling scenario. Once you have located the fish adjust the line to hit the targeted depth. In the book you will also find conversion charts for types of line. Most common lines are 10# mono and 14Lb fireline. However if you use fireline make sure you buy a special clip for the Off shore board. I believe it is the OR-18. Otherwise you will have to double wrap you line to the board.

    I hope this helps.

Fireflick is right on the money, definitely get yourself a precision trolling book. It sures takes a lot of the guess work out of things. I run the Off-Shore boards with a clip on the tow arm made by Church Tackle. It is a very easy clip to use & works well with mono or fireline. I then use the red off-shore clip (OR-14??) on the back. I also suggest using the Tattle flags. You can buy the tattle kits at a store like Gander Mountain. I made my own tattle flags with materials purchased at my local Fleet Farm. Either way, I sure think it makes running boards easier and more enjoyable for anglers that are just starting to experiment with boards.

Where can you find the clips from Church tackle? Do they really hold without “double wrapping’?

I use the OR-18 snapper release shown here. Works on all lines, mono and super braids. Never had a board come off or slip. Period!

Church Tackle has a website, not sure of the exact address, you should be able to find it doing a yahoo or google search. They do work without double wrapping. I think they are a pretty amazing clip. Not alot of monkeying around and you can get them with a set screw to adjust the tension, yet they go on quite easy. They also seem to hold up pretty good as I am still using some of the same clips I ordered years ago. I believe you can order them right off the site. I have just called and ordered them over the phone.

Dr. Hook, the website is http://www.churchtackle.com The releases that I use are the Adjustable Replacement Clip (super clip) part # 40420. They come in a 2 pack for $9.98.
