Loveless

2 years ago a good friend showed me a cute little lake that was alive with bass action. We did a little of everything there one day and boated some decent numbers of bass.

Last week my nephew Chris said he wanted to get on a good bass lake and I got to thinking that if I could remember how to get to Loveless, I’d take him there and see if things might go the same way.

Nope. 2 bass for the whole day, and they were small to boot! Crappies and sunnies were certainly active and had we planned on chasing such critters, we’d have a good fry come Friday! Well, at least he would…….. I couldn’t catch ’em. Rooster Tail was the productive choice.

In spite of having a tough afternoon, we got into a trolling pattern as evening wore on and it changed our day completely! While numbers were still low, the quality was awesome! See pics below!

I was pulling a discontinued Storm Lightning Shad Jr. in hot red, as I’ve seen bass take to this before. I didn’t troll 3 minutes and a beautiful, healthy, and stocky 2′ pike was seein’ what I was or wasn’t made of! Alright…. I’ve heard pike numbers aren’t high but if they’re willing to play, so am I.

I kept trolling and found 1 of the days largemouth bass next. Another came to the boat from the same area so I thought we’d found “the spot”. NOPE. No more bass for the day.

Returning to the trolling game, I gave a Rapala Shad Rap, #5 in Natural to my nephew because he didn’t pack much for cranks. He didn’t troll that lure 2 minutes when this fish gave him a great fight and became the biggest fish he’s ever landed! A 31″ pike, unweighed, but thick and heavy feeling.

Why are my pictures blurry? They’re not that way on my pc? I guess I’ll address that later. On with the post!

Right after that great catch, a 9″ sunny decided to join the “I bit a Shad Rap and lived to tell about it” club.

Chris continued to catch nice gills and a stray crappie or two but as we got closer to the end of another great day of fishing, the action took a noticeable decrease in frequency. I decided to change lures… it had been too long for me! I put on a floating chartreuse and silver Rebel Shad-R. Almost instant was the difference as this 30″ pike gave me one of my best pike fights ever! This fish was gamey and determined…….. but got her picture taken anyway!

    Nice Fish.

I have uncles and friends that say Lovless is one of the best lakes in the area for quality pike.
