I will be in the area on saturday the 10 th for a week. Was wondering about trolling on these lakes, someone told me that it not allowed with anytype of a motor. Is that true. I will mainly focus on walleye and crappie, or i guess whatever may be biting. My main question is how are walleye caught on tomahawk without trolling and what works great. Thanks

If you get a hotspot map for Lake Tomahawk there are a couple of reefs that are poperlar for walleye. The trolling regs are listed in the DNR fishing reg book. There are allot of good lakes in that area. Check with any of the local bait shops for current info, I go there a least once a year.

    walleyefarm:

Received your pm and will add comments to your questions here. Trolling is not allowed on any of the lakes in Vilas and Oneida counties with the exception of the flowages (Willow, Rainbow, Turtle-Flambeau). Thus fishing on Tomahawk is a drifting deal, an anchoring deal or a position fishing deal. Position fishing is not trolling but precision drifting. You must keep your fishing line vertical while operating your trolling motor. You might use jigs with bait or plastics. You might rig for them or perhaps slip bobber them. There might be other presentations, but these seem to be the most popular.

I will tell you that as fishing goes this summer, it has been a tough bite. We are still struggling to get our water temps into the 70’s. Those water temps are common on our big lakes by June 15th usually. We might be as much as a month behind our normal patterns. I have talked to people who are catching walleyes and people who are catching smallmouth bass. Crappies might be just getting on the beds when you get here. Same with the bluegills.

Just remember the goods words that I have been hearing. Good fishing with good weather and bad fishing with the bad weather. Good weather means warming water, not necessarily rain. It never made it above 55* air temp today and they are predicting warmer air temps through the weekend, however still calling for rain. If you consider springing for guide right away, let me know and I can check to see who might be open. Otherwise I will help as much as I can.

That would be very helpful to me if you could see if kurt has a spot open on sunday or monday or another quality guide. So I can vertical jig and troll, Is that correct. Maybe we should meet up and you can give me some pointers on areas to hit and wouldn’t mind trying flambou flowage or something like that.

Just got off the phone with Kurt Justice and he has the p.m. open on Sunday, otherwise he is booked Sun a.m. and Monday all day. If you are interested in another guide, he mentioned Rick Writz who is a very compentent walleye guide. He did mention another gentleman, but can’t remember his name. If Kurt can get you booked with anyone out of his shop, you can feel comfortable that you have gotten a good man. Kurt’s phone number is 715-356-4797. He was in the shop just before noon, give him a call.

As for jigging and trolling, you can do both on the flowages. For me I hope I can get out with you on the chain lakes, but for me to get to the Turtle Flambeau will be difficult as I work from early to mid a.m. until past 6 p.m. every night. Make sure you have a map and I will meet you to point you to a couple of spots.
