I like to venture new waters if I can and I work in the west metro, live in the east…. so yeah, anything inbetween or close by is on my probability list.
I don’t get on Mallelieu like I used to because I want to try new places but I used to spend at least one day each week punishing the fish there. As much as I fished it, it surprises me that I’ve never got into any of the northerns that are in there. They’re few, but they tend to get big because of that. One day…….. one day……..
I did hear a report a couple years back that someone reported in to the DNR of a bass club holding regular tournies and keeping all the bass. If there’s any truth to this, it would reduce the number of 5-6# fish that used to be in there. 3 years ago, the biggest bass of the season went over 7lbs! It’s got fabulous potential if managed and treated properly. The panfish and bull head numbers have been low the past couple of years too…. no explaination, but it’s true. Either the big bass were balancing it out or the “flood fish” really took it to them. Flood fish are the muskies, walleyes, and catfish that’ll get in there if the Croix gets high enough. The walleyes don’t survive long and the muskies get caught quickly. Any cats that got in there are likely still in there. Someone should try chasing a few and see if any monster flatheads have been growing in there!
The trip to Hudson isn’t as bad on the weeknights as it is on the weekends. If you’re game for that, I’ve got some time in July I could share with you.
