This is just a quick report.

Headed out to Mallileuo (sp??), the lake just north of Hudson on Sunday for a couple of hours. We eneded up getting about 20 bass, a mix or largies and smallies. THe biggest LM was about 2 lbs and the largest smally was about 1″. The fish all came out of shallow water. We really didn’t get a pattern figured out but had some success, not much size though. The fish we did catch where caught under some docks and then by fan casting small cranks. The fish under the docks came on senkos on a watermelon color. The fish on the cranks where caught on a yellow baby-1.
Fun lake to fish but the traffic getting there sure did suck.

This is a tough year for pleasant drives to Hudson! Nice to hear someone is getting out there. Last 2 weeknights I looked, EMPTY landing! It’s usually pretty active so I’ve been curious to know if anything’s been going on.

I can tell you that all the big largies hang out in the NW lily field. In the SW corner of the south bay, there are more lilies but lesser consistancies. Just NE of that lily field is an area of dead heads….. good fish can be caught there from time to time too. My greatest find on Mallelieu is getting a weedless plastic right into the shoreline vegetation. 3+lbers hide in these ambush spots and only take what lands in front of their noses! Husky Jerk #6’s are great for this too! Small, natural looking lures often yield me decent fish.

Let us know how it goes next time!

    Stillakid-

How often you get out there? I can see that this must be in your backyard from your profile. We had a tourney there a while back and the everyone did alright, nothing too huge came to the weigh in though, couple 4s the biggest. I might have to get out there again but with the construction going on that might need to wait a bit or I am going to have to plan on a slow drive.

You also appear to be a well traveler when it comes to fishing, like myself, considering you where fishing up at Johanna a week ago.

I like to venture new waters if I can and I work in the west metro, live in the east…. so yeah, anything inbetween or close by is on my probability list.

I don’t get on Mallelieu like I used to because I want to try new places but I used to spend at least one day each week punishing the fish there. As much as I fished it, it surprises me that I’ve never got into any of the northerns that are in there. They’re few, but they tend to get big because of that. One day…….. one day……..

I did hear a report a couple years back that someone reported in to the DNR of a bass club holding regular tournies and keeping all the bass. If there’s any truth to this, it would reduce the number of 5-6# fish that used to be in there. 3 years ago, the biggest bass of the season went over 7lbs! It’s got fabulous potential if managed and treated properly. The panfish and bull head numbers have been low the past couple of years too…. no explaination, but it’s true. Either the big bass were balancing it out or the “flood fish” really took it to them. Flood fish are the muskies, walleyes, and catfish that’ll get in there if the Croix gets high enough. The walleyes don’t survive long and the muskies get caught quickly. Any cats that got in there are likely still in there. Someone should try chasing a few and see if any monster flatheads have been growing in there!

The trip to Hudson isn’t as bad on the weeknights as it is on the weekends. If you’re game for that, I’ve got some time in July I could share with you.

Thanks for the information on the lake. One of my buddies in the club used to live on the lake when he was younger and he has the same stories about the size of the fish in there. It would be a shame if people, mainly bass tourneys, took these big fish out of the lake. They should all just be left there.

Sounds good about July. I will keep that in mind when that time approaches.
