Isn’t this just great now it is getting a little out of line. Bag limit on a lake I love to fish has changed to 1. What in the world seriously 1 fish??

If your talking about a lake near your location, that 1 fish doesn’t have much meat on it either! Unless you are lucky enough to get 1 over the slot!
This will turn into a flaming thread soon enough, so I will withhold my true feelings about these very outdated treaty rights.
Didn’t we do this once already? (have a b—- session)
Maybe someone with good search skills can find the old thread and post it here.
I was shocked to read this article today, if it was posted prevoiusly I appologize. I am not very happy and felt bad reading about all the topics on Lake Mille Lacs and now know exactly how it feels to have it hit this close to my home body of water.
I about had a heart attack when I saw this thread started today thinking that they were declaring even higher spearing numbers.
1 fish…Just think about that…1 fish. This is unbelievable! Coming to a Minnesota lake near you in the near future. Bet on it…RR
Slow down folks! Maybe the main reason this declaration has taken place is to bring to attention the mining bill that was passed without any input or ramifications to environment. Since the tribes are directly affected by the proposed mines and the lack of input and say in this matter, maybe this is how to get some voice with others that are brought into the fray. Look at the Governor and Gogebec Mining.

Easy to be a sympathizer when you are on the outside looking in. Their protests against the mining bill & their blowing smoke is just that. This is 2013 and you know as well as I do that you just can’t go dig a hole in the ground & destroy the environment. I was born & raised up there, & when I graduated from Mellen in 1965, our class was 35 kids. Mellen High School graduated 16 kids last year. That country is dying, and this proposed mine will save countless futures and breathe new life into Northern Wisconsin. This one fish limit is just another one of their ploys. They got their federal money, this is not about “mother earth”!! It’s time to change the game. We’ve been held hostage long enough!!
You know damn well they will just pick the best fishing lakes from the huge list, destroy them, then move on next year to a better one, round robin.
How can one group of people declare ownership of our natural resources in what I thought was modern times? AND those footing the bill get screwed!!! Until this topic came up a few years ago I wasnt even aware of racial descrimination between tribal and non-tribal members. I sure didnt feel any. I use to envy them. Now I am being forced to resent them!!!! That is so wrong.

100 % agree marc. that mine will be a game changer for that area. i like to snowmobile and fish over by montreal. those folks need jobs that pay a livable wage..
I have a cabin in the ceded area and the natives usually throw in some fish when we do our stocking with the association. So in this case they are replacing some fish. Alot more than 75% of the other shore owners who don’t contribute.
The lake we fish (Holcombe) is down to 2. In my experience the fish that we do catch are all less than 14 inches.

Don’t the shore owners pay property, county, state, and federal tax, and if they buy licences does’nt part of that go into managing resources…just to have them raided?
theres DNR nets out already on Cedar that will be checked tomorrow morning. Im really unsure of what to expect to see after this 1 limit decree.

I don’t believe for a minute that this kind of spearing is justified.
On the other hand, I’ll be totally amazed if mining even comes close to reviving a single town in northern Wisconsin.
No matter how big a hole they dig, I just don’t see that happening.
fresh Cedar Lake report, was out there from 7 til 2 today pulling and setting nets. the tribe work is already done, they took their quota and moved on to look for another open lake. their quota was 364, which with the ice out timing was kind of bad as all sexually mature fish were either throwing milt or eggs today. one net held 50 eyes alone, totalling out over 120. 90-95% of those numbers were 15″ or larger, while around 75-80% were males. juvenile crappies in the hundreds, and a few 36-40″ class muskies as well.
just spoke to my boss, sounds like they counted 135 more walleye yesterday, but got none in the two newly set nets. those ones were filled with only northerns and muskies, biggest one measuring around 44″.
Salmo Trutta, Thanks for posting that information. Do you think the daily bag will be put back to 2 walleye?
from what Ive seen so far, wether its a 3, 2, or 1 fish limit, a high majority of the fish are within the protected slot range. the keepers I did see would of been an anglers 1 over 18″ anyways, with very few coming under 14″. In a few years when these slot class fish move out of protected range there could possibly be a limit shift, but thats all speculation.
double update today, spawn is in full swing out there now. yesterday we picked up 284 total, with one net alone holding 120 male walleyes. today presented something much different that had not been seen in prior days, and that was a high number of unsexed juveniles. todays tally came in just over 100 total, which could suggest a spawn-postspawn transition thats about to occur over then next couple of days. we also shocked the creek today, but I dont know those numbers off hand yet.
the one big thing that stand out to me still is the ratio of sexually mature males to females in this lake. of the 284, only 26 yesterday were female. thats below 10% of the surveyed population for that day. If the female to male ratio drops below 5% Im not sure if itll be safe to even say Cedar Lake has a naturally reproducing walleye population.
I was speaking to the game wardens at the landing during the weekend and found out that it was likely that there was going to be no change to the original bag limits posted this spring, so this is an excellent surprise!!!
Mark
Yea a nice surprise. They had some of the new bag limits posted Friday already. My daughter took a day of vacation this coming Friday to fish with me. Should be a good time.
