We visited our favorite Western Wisconsin trout stream for the 2013 opener…Started the morning with very cold hands. The morning temperature was 5 deg when I picked up my fishing buddy early in the morning. Slowly rising temperatures throughout the day helped warm us up; I suspect the daytime high temperature was somewhere in the mid 20’s; pretty much had to pick ice off the fly rod guides all day. Fishing was great and we soon forgot about our cold fingers and numb feet.
Even with the chilly temperatures the trout were ready and eager to take our fly offerings. Numbers of fish we caught were great once we found the slower deeper holes; in some cases we even had mutliple hook ups at a time in the same run. This time of the year, trout still prefer slower and deeper areas over faster riffles. Most of our fish were in the 8″ to 12″ with big fish around 14″.
We look forward to the Wisconsin trout opener every year and our little stream is a special place.
