I spent today with IDA member, Superfluke. Not much to say for Round yet. Suspending Smichwicks used in dead sticking technique will produce smallmouth bites but with the water only measuring 46 degrees, we had to work for them.
We ventured out for warmer waters and temperatures and found just that in Red Cedar Lake. Smallies off of points and breaks, particularly in wind beaten areas. Walleyes were also to be found in the area. All fish were still caught dead sticking suspending lures but not just suspending rogues anymore! I brought in a 5-6lb. dogfish on a Rapala HJ10 Glass Minnow. That’s okay, the lure made up for it just a few moments later with a 17″ eye. No too much later, 2 CO’s came over to check us out. We told him of our catches but looked rather…… disappointed when we had nothing in the livewell to be verified. That musta been the point that one of ’em decided we needed to be tutored. Did you know that 17″ eye was legal? Perfect size for eating. In fact, that’s the size the locals here call “eaters”. Well mercy me………. with wisdom like that, no wonder I’ve been sleeping better! But, I just can’t figure out what the rest of the world calls eaters? The bite was really turning on as the storm was approaching but we knew we’d better get off that water. Safety carries a high accountability for ensuring more days of pleasant recreational activity.
Keep fishing guys, the best is right around the corner! And hey, let us know how you did and save some fish for the rest of us!
