I’m sure most of you have been checking your local lakes out and have noticed the same thing, but I was so happy to see open water I just wanted to let everyone know that ALL the lakes in St. Croix county are open for business. Going out next week a few times in search of some crappie. See you all in 2 1/2 weeks on the water or possibly the tavern at night —————-Pax

Will do – Going to hit Pine (baldwin) first, then another day up at Squaw. I’ve got a spring honey hole up there that I get the shakes for every spring.

Do you actually keep any of the Crappie out of Squaw? I was there last June and picked up a few for the pan. Mistake, they really smelt / tasted fishy and skunky. That lake greens up quick. Its fun to catch them though.

I would suppose that the crappies are coming into the shallows nicely now. Anyone hitting them on anything?
    Thanks,

I don’t keep fish once the water gets above 55 -65 degrees at all. Ice fishing or early spring is for eatin’ and the rest of the year is for fun. I know where some big perch are being caught right now………..

Got a few crappies and bluegills yesterday morning despite the cold, windy weather, About 4-5 of each in an hour and one half on Pine. Crappies on the minnows and the bluegills on half a crawler.

All of our major waters are now open here in Oneida and Vilas counties. Checking to see if the smelt are running on Fence Lake tonite before getting cold and wet seining tomorrow night.

Hit Squaw on Friday. Did pretty good. Big gills and average crappies. Funny thing though- Crappies on crawlers and gills on minnows! Oh well – just goes to show that fishing is not predictable. Good luck next weekend.
