Well a group of 8 of us hit the big Winnie last weekend. Had my cousin even fly in from LA. Stayed at Highbanks and all I can say is they are working hard to keep access to the lake. Snow is deep and so is the slush. Every hole you drill water is coming up. Perch fishing was slow but we were limited to being in permanent houses mostly. Travel by vehicle is on the few roads they have open. And walking off road is tough. Couple of the guys had snowmobiles and did some running and gunnin but also had adventures getting out of deep slush. Flat light conditions when running across the lake makes it hard to see. Perch were caught in 25-30 fow and the usual mix of jigs and spoons with minnows. You had to sort little ones out but we managed about 70 nice keepers. Walleye bite was good the last couple hours on a few of the humps. Had some bigger ones on but lost before seeing. But over the couple days we did manage about a dozen eaters. Not the normal when most people complain about all the slot fish. Jiggin raps and rattle spoons with heads seemed to be the ticket. Did get a few pike on tip-ups but not a huge bite. Rick and Jigglestick and Moose are working hard to maintain roads and move house and build bridges. The slush is a nightmare. Roads opened up today are gone tomorrow. And Kim did a fantastic job in the lodge helping us Packer fans celebrate the victory. I’ve caught more fish in other years. But a long weekend with friends and family is never a bad thing.

Kudos to those keeping the accesses open. I’ve been talking to people all over N. MN and its bad on many lakes with some nearly impossible to travel regardless of the transportation available.

    Thanks for the report.

It so sad to hear about the slush on Winnie and Leech this year. I supposed all over up there. I remember one year when it was flat ice on Winnie and you could drive anywhere and just follow your GPS.

Yeah a couple years back when we had that great ice and lack of snow was fun. I remember putting 90 miles on the truck that weekend on the ice. The bite was on the far side from Highbanks. On the positive side at least you don’t need an extension on the auger this year.
