    The bite is HOT!

On Thursday and Friday we had some interesting weather. On Thursday we stayed on the water too long and got caught in the rain and hail. We had ping pong size hail beating down on us, so all we could do is crouch on the floor under the seats and wait it out. There were trees down around the area and my Dad’s truck took a beating with the hail. On Friday we didn’t fish much, but the huge winds from the South wind made it tough to even graph fish. We ended our day early with a 9 mile run to the landing in waves I swear were 8-10 feet that settled down to 4-5 as we got closer to shore.

On Saturday and Sunday we fished the MTT tournament. On Saturday morning we found some hungry fish in the weeds at 10-12 feet. Unfortunately, most of them were 18-23″ fish. (If we were fun fishing I probably wouldn’t have ever left) We saw some fish caught on jigs, but all of ours came on lindy rigs with leeches. In the afternoon we moved out to deeper water and found the fish we were looking for. We caught a ton of fish and ended up with 5 fish in the 15-16 3/4″ range. On Sunday we went to the same area and caught a whole bunch of fish again. Most of them were in the 12-20″ range. We had a blast catching fish, but couldn’t find the nicer 16″ fish to upgrade our limit. Oh well, it was a fun day on the water and a great way to spend Fathers Day with my Dad. All of the midlake fish were caught on flats in 18-20 feet of water while rigging a leech.

The Mille Lacs bite is hot this year, and so is the Winnie bite. I’m hoping we can get back up there again this summer.

Portage Lake resort Here is one of the two resorts on the lake, I’m not sure about a public ramp or where it would be, but check mn dnr lake finder, something should show up there. We went down the east side of the lake looking for access to Portage Bay on Leech, the road we were on led to a campground (on Portage Bay). Pretty nice looking places.
