Travel Conditions on Winnie

The travel still remains pretty good out there. There are a number of roads plowed out to the main perch fishing area, located throughout the lake. IF your looking to explore on your own, I would suggest a four wheel drive as some of the drifts are getting hard and a touch deep. There is a good sized ice heave or ridge on the west shoreline that one needs to be careful with, its easy to spot, but use extreme caution when near it and do not try to cross it unless others have. Ice auger extensions are not needed yet as we are only pushing 30-34 inches of ice in most places.

I hear you’ve been on a heck of a bite out there. I wish I could get free to make it out with you. Do you think it will hold up for a while?

Ouch that hurts. Last night Jeff and I along with two others were hoping to hit the walleyes on Winnie. The bite has been consist for us in the same area for three weeks, but last night we found out the real meaning of fishing. We fished and did very little catching. But to get some positive out of the trip we did manage to have a numbers of good laughs and realized that we are in the heart of winter and a day or two before the February full moon. So was it the full moon that slowed are fishing last night? Boy I’m thinking it may be part of it, along with the fact that we are bond to have one slow night in three weeks. Any comment on the full moon effects on walleyes in the winter?

Interesting reading on the FishingMN site about the plowing of that lake access. Claims they were tired of pulling people out that were stuck??

Yikes the people over at FM are not real happy about the access being closed. This is a lose-lose in my eyes.

On Friday 2-13-04 someone with a nice tractor did folks a favor and opened up the landing at the Birches again. They ran a nice road out west a mile or so from the landing. Now even though there is about a foot of snow on the lake, it has settled down and for the most part we are able to drive with a 4 X 4 truck anywhere on the lake. Last night we came in from the Zoomers area without using any roads.
I cetainly believe that folks should be free to use the public access if it is available and my hat is off to whoever opened up the landing.
On the flip side, there is also a certain comfort that comes with using a well maintained, paid access road. I personally like the idea that help is near by if I get in trouble and if that costs a few bucks, it’s a pretty good trade off.
