I am hitting Winnie the last weekend of the month for my bachelor party with family and friends. Some of the family ice fish there each winter and know some areas to go to. I am wondering if anyone here has advice on lures, jigs, colors and baits that might help me to catch a few fish. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

IF you don’t get the answers you’re looking for you might want to post this in the ice forum. The winnie forum is DEAD. The ice forum… rocking.

A friend just came back from a long weekend. He fishes out of Nodak. Plain red hook, no weight took the most fish. Go figure! He had to sort a few on perch but had a good time catching eater eyes. Quite a few in the slot also. Biggest was 25 1/2. If you have a camera, bring it. Once your on fish, you’ll have more fun watching the cam than the flasher. There is lots of ice right now and now heaves to speak of.
Don’t know if it’s just me, but gold always seems to be my top choice up there.
Good luck, let us know how you do.

I responded to you in the ice fishing forum. One other thing to add is be sure you’re using a fluorocarbon leader from your main line to the lure.

    Again, good luck.

I’ve done well fishing perch with the small Northland forage minnows and a minnow head. You have to move alot to find fish. If you go out of a place like Nodaks, they will usually point you in a general direction as to where they are catching a few fish. After you get there, plan on drilling a lot of holes in order to find fish.

My preference is to fish the shorline structure on the west side of the lake.

my understanding is the shoreline breaks on the West side hold the bigger fish, but you won’t catch as many. If it’s quantity and you don’t mind sorting dinks, then head to the deep mud.
