I went to the resort today to open the landing and the parking lot at the shoreline.

    what a mess!

the wave action as the ice was forming created an ice ridge to big to pull houses over and deffinately to rough for cars. so scroungie and I spent a half hour dihgging through the drift to get to it and then an hour chiseling it away good enough for the plow to go over.

then I shoveled the three feet of snow out far enough to feel confident I could get the truck through to the ice where it was my plan to go straight out until the snow depth would not impede my travel and then come in sideways pusshing the snow away from the ramp and create a parking lot on the ice.

could it have gone worse? yes, but lets say I made it 40 feet from shore and found the old crack that was healed over over a week ago, expanded underneath the snow and I found it!

about 14 inches wide, my drivers side front tire dropped into it.

keep in mind, it is only about two feet deep there. this I know cause while I was positioning my jack, I stepped in the crack by mistake and stood on the sand underneath. it was just over my knee and cold!

with a little luck, I was able to use the handy man jack to lift the truck and I got a plank under the tire. I then set the truck back down on the plank and was able to drive out in reverse.

the weight from the new snow, and there’s a lot of it, is pushing water up through this crack big time.

not sure how were gonna handle it. it would be ideal to scrape the slush away and let the exposed water freeze rock hard.

my guess is out a hundred yards or so we will run away from the water and find dry ice again. what I’m afraid of is that where ever we punch holes water is gonna come gushing up.

one way or another we’ll get it figured out.

again I stand by the statement that I am very glad we had the ice we did before the storm.

    keep checking in.

I’m working on a plan B for the early season guests.

heck, maybe we’ll all just get together and party like rock stars at putz’s place while he’s outa town!

    12 inches of snow!!

thanks for the report Russ! hows judge judy?
    how about the beav?
sure miss you guys out on the lake!

stopped at freds today and he confirmed that Denny’s has a road out now. maybe I’ll give them a call to see how far out they are and what kind of traffic they are allowing out.
that is the first road I have heard of on the big lake so far.
sounds like the pines and highbanks will be waiting a while.
there has been some traffic out on cutfoot and good numbers of crappies along with some nice walleyes taken as well.

the shiner supply may be hard to come by this season.
a poor run of emeralds up north on the river and the spot tails are also few and far between.
good thing the walleyes like the chubs just as well.
I like to have both in my house when fishing walleyes, but the chubs keep WAY better than the shiners do and they are always plentiful. cheaper too!

there is traffic getting out, but mostly sleds, atv’s with chains and other tracked vehicles.

the cold is having some success freezing the slush down, though in conditions like this we always have to watch out for slush pockets and hidden cracks under the snow cover caused by the deep freeze temperatures.

Keep your stick on the ice!
