We returned Saturday the 29th from a week on Winnie from Sat. the 21st through Friday the 28th. The eye fishing started out slowly but picked up steam as the week went on – northern guys were knocking them out from the start so we ate fish and fried taters 3-4 nights.
I educated the boys on the importance of having a variety of baits in the boat because some of the days the fish really showed a preference for leeches, crawlers or minnows – my uncle won’t use anything but leeches and he had a few days where he didn’t catch much. I had brought up the crawlers and had bought rainbows at Freds and it made a world of difference – I also educated them on the importance of 1 foot contour GPS – there were some very specific spots where we caught the vast majority of our fish this trip. And the new custom Lindy rod I built just before the trip worked – once I had a chance to catch a few fish on it to figure it out I did quite well with it. In fact our best day we caught 24 eyes from my boat and a dozen nice perch – of course with the slot limit up there most of them had to go back – didn’t catch anything bigger than 20.5 inches myself – but lotsa 18-20’s. Fun to catch for sure – the future looks bright for trophies with that year class in there in 4-5 years.
I also figured out how to jig fish up there and caught lots of keeper eyes the last several days there… we came home with our limits of Northerns and eyes for each of us. We had lots of rain so the raingear was put to the test… but all in all another great trip to Winninbigosh.
By the end of the week many Winnie eyes were being caught in Cutfoot – easy to tell because they lack the tannic gold color of the native Cutfoot eyes. Bobs Bar was good to us as well as a spot we call Eagles nest. We caught most of ours up in 9-10 feet of water so I wouldn’t be surprised if the fish are up more shallow than that as well. Good luck if you head up,
Chuckles
