The wife and I hit it hard on Sat. The plan was to run n gun chasing jumbo’s and eyes. We landed at 3 birches at 7am, made our way out to the mid lake flats, pounded many holes, not a keeper in sight. We had the camera down w/ reel weeds, huge schools of small perch, but nothing worth spending to much time on. Off to the next flat, again turned the flat into swiss cheese from top to bottom, bouncing from hole to hole, nothing. We made several moves through out the day with nothing to show for our effort. We ended the day on a 20′ break just out from birches, had the weeds/camera down, nothing to show, pulled the weeds up and put them away. Of course the fish started biting! Caught a dozen or so eyes, all small though, 10″. After a long day of running and the downpour starting we decided to call it a day. I’ll be hitting it again soon, hopefully with better luck. P.S. 12-16″ of ice, mid lake with a few slushy spots.

Did you hit any of the shallow shoreline flats? Last year the bigger seemed to stay shallow pretty late into the year.

That’s about the only area we didn’t hit. As we were driving home we discussed the fact that we hit most depths except the shallow stuff. Next time.

I would have to agree with Scott on this one. Bowens Flats and areas off of Plug Hat Point have been providing non-stop action for the last couple of weeks. You have to sort through a lot of 7-9 inch Perch to get the true Jumbos, but they are there. Walleye action on the flats has been good during low light hours. Again, there is a large year class of 10-12 inchers, but there are some pigs out there as well. We’ll have to see how long this shallow bite stays with us. It’s pretty easy fishing right now.

    Jeff,
I will be heading up there on 2/22/07 and would like to look you up . We have been going now for several years and have always stayed at another resort, but I am interested in providing support to IDAers so I may stop over an see you. I just hope that we have the ice to drive on. I have a total of 10 guys comeing this year, 4 new guys, so I hope the fishing is good. As we get closer to the date, I will be sending you a PM to see if you are willing to provide some additional directions.
I do have to say, it has always been a blast. Didn’t get very good service last year by the resort owner, but thought I would give them one more try. Lets hope it not a mistake. Anyway, I maybe looking to see you them. Thanks for the postings and keep them coming.

Maybe I should have changed the title to…mid lake humps, not to hot. I’ll get them next time!

A rough day on the water is always a little easier to swallow when you put in a good effort. It sounds like you busted your butt out there. I know for me it makes all the difference in the world to my mental state at the end of the day if I feel that I gave 100% of available energy and determination. If I can think back to times in the day when I opted for the easier walk or held back a little on the effort and paid for it with slow fishing… those are the days that gnaw at me.

Anyway… I took this off topic. Thanks for the reports, gents. I’ve said it before and I’ll likely grow old saying it some more… there is no better tasting fish than an 11″ perch from Winnie.
