Fall Fishing Lake Winnie

O.K., I did not fall fish Lake Winnie this year. I have fished the fall time since 1964. We used to catch a lot of great walleyes at Bowen Flats area. Lots of time it was hit or miss. These were the days when we had a 14 foot AlumaCraft with an 18 horse Johnson. O.K., now we have evolved to this present time. I now have a big boat with all the electronics etc. The last 7 years it has not been hit or miss. It is usually miss! I have done real well on another lake nearby. My question is since the time when the lake was supplied with main depth spawning areas has this added to the decline of the fall migration pattern on Winnie? Just wondering about the fishing in October that “seems” to have gone down hill. I notice that there are not many or hardly any reports from Winnie after the middle of September. I know the history of Winnie very well. I am in favor of the slot limits. I also realize that too many spawn type fish were harvested back in the time that we had good fishing. I just would like to know if you fisherman(women)have had the same experience in fall fishing on Winnie. Thank you for any observations on this question.

Mac…. We urine pounded (for lack of a better term) the ‘eyes on Winnie last weekend of October….
We fished Sat from 4pm to 7pm and boated over 30 fish in the 14 to 16 inch range

Jig’n minnow in 8-10 FOW in the “dishes”…..

Not far from Bowen, so I’m not sure what your deal could have been, but Bowstring is fun to so If your catchin’ fish there then thats cool too.

    Later buddy.

I have found some of the best fishing on Winnie during open water to be in the fall months. I would have to agree that the migration appears to have changed locations a bit over the years but with anyone willing to change with them they can still find a lot of fish.

Early fall I will begin with a jig and minnow (large shiners or red tails) combination normally in 8-12ft of water. How fast I jig will be determined by the aggression level of the fish. Later in the fall I begin to hit my first ice locations and often times I will even use ice tackle to have my best fishing results.

Talk to the local resort owners as they often times have been out that day. They are there but you just need to find them.

I would have to agree that the fishing this fall was excellent!. The North shore was very good in 5-8 fow with a jig and minnow combo. Very good Perch action as well near Stoney Point. The Dishes and Tamarack Point also gave up a lot of fish.

Looking forward to some great ice fishing this year. I will try to give weekly reports as the season gets underway.
