Lake Winnie….starts out great….Great opening weekend for the most part……Even though the weather wasn’t the warmest, and it rained most of the afternoon Saturday, the fishing was great. Numbers of slot fish were caught with the largest fish coming in around 7 lbs.

With the cold water the ticket on presentation was 1/16-1/32 once jigs tipped with a silver shiner or fathead, and basically moved in a swimming motion. 6-9 feet of water seemed to be the area were most eater fish were concentrated, yet fish were caught deeper and shallower.

Look for the fish to move into the 4-6 foot range over the next few weeks, and the fishing to get even better, even though it may be hard to beat what was done this opening weekend of 2002.

Wow. Sounds like Winnie shows some real promise for this season. Looks like the slot is paying off.

Thanks for all the great reports Sean!

I have to second everything Sean said. Small world…. He and I ran into one another on Bowens Flats at the tail end of a dynamite bite. Later that night we got our best fish of the trip, a 28-1/2 female that hadn’t yet spawned!

I was told that this fish is a shore spawning female and that one big reason for the slot was to replenish these fish. Sound valid?

I don’t know if stingers are seen as unethical by many of you out there but, we used stingers the whole time. I think that 40-60% of the fish we caught were hooked on the stinger. One last thing, during mid-day the walleyes definately liked a more active jigging approach. My buddy put me to shame before I went to school on his technique.
