We will be coming to Remer this weekend (2/1-3). How are the ice conditions on Winni. Is it safe to drive on? Down here in the South end of the state no driving is allowed anywhere. I have never fished Winnie. Any info would be appreciated.

Ice Condition are pretty good. Winnie has about 23-25″ of good ice, just be careful around inlets and outlets. I would highly recommed staying on the plowed roads. They are driving on most lakes in are area. Make sure to talk to the resort owners or bait shops for more information once you get to where you are heading.

Hey Sean, I might get laughed at for asking about this fish, but what are some of the bigger size eelpout you see caught on winni? I went up there with my dnr buddies last year perchin and we ate a bunch of em. They were great. Cubed them up and boiled them in 7-up and dipped them in butter! Do many people eat them that you know of? Thanks.

Eelpout, you mean the poor folks lobster, at least that’s what I have heard it called many of times. On the south end of the lake, they catch some 8-10 pounders each year. Number wise I think the numbers of fish are there, but alot of people in are area perfer the perch and walleyes over the pout. I certainly don’t know a bunch of people who eat them, but there are people that keep them when they catch um. I can tell you from a guiding stand point, I have and don’t imagine that any of the guides in our league have booked an eelpout trip. As for your favorite recipe of pout, thats the only way I have heard of cooking them, besides smoking them. I have tried them before and it is pretty tasty, but I think the thought of eating such an ugly fish is what draws anglers away from keeping them.
