North of Winnie to Red Lake

Red Lake oh Red Lake, if you haven’t mad the trip up here for the huge I mean huge crappies, from now to ice out is the time. The fish are averaging 13-15″ with many more fish being caught in the 16-17″ range. The last two weeks have seen the Monsters of the lake go crazy, the Northerns are tearing up the tackle gear. Numbers of 15-17 pound northerns are being caught. I heard that many 20 pound plus fish that have also been caught and kept for the wall. The is a fishing factory that is second to none, yet it is a long drive for most but well worth it.

Speaking of north of Winni……have you fished Round lake? Man, that lake has loads of 1 to 2 pound walleyes! And some big northerns. Jon

Hey Sean, sounds like a blast catching those crappies just wondering if a person was to head up that way where is a good place to stay. I don’t need anything fancy but after a day on the ice it’s just good to shower and strech out somewhere. When we are up that way fishing Winnie in the winter we just stay at the Taj Mahajl in Deer River and split the room. I’ve never been to Red so don’t have any idea on where to stay. Might have to hit Winnie for perch then head to Red.

The Shooks Motel, its just 15 or 20 minutes from the lake. Its a decent place, other then that theres not much available. You could call the resorts to see if they have rooms available as well. Each resort Rogers and Hudecs have sleeper houses, but not much for showers in those houses. Your next best bet would be Bemidji, this is about an hour or so from the lake. Well if you have more question let me know.

Yes round can be great, it is one of those secret lakes. They are pulling some nice crappies out of there right know. Its hard to stop there when you know whats happening on Red.
