VERY curious regarding the ice bite on Winnie? I’m going to be staying at Judd’s Resort first to second week of January. Any ideas for this time of year. Yes I realize there isn’t a specific time frame, but there is usually a general time bite relationship. I’m interested in Perch, walleye and Jackfish!

    Thabnks for any and all!!!

    Jim W,

Well the bite can be good at this time of the year pending on the ice conditions and snow conditions. Meaning can you get to the main bars and humps where the fish are during the frozen water months. Most of your jumbo perch are fairly predictable, they tend to group up on top of the bars, especially when there feeding, most of your larger perch come from the 18-25′ of water. Now for the walleyes, the best advice I can give you is be patience, but being in the right place at the right time will help you out. Walleye’s on Winnie seem to feed mainly at daybreak and at sunset, with some caught that first hour or so after dark. I have had some of my best fishing at daybreak. The eye’s tend to hold close to the bars and humps. Your best bet for the eyes are on the deep structure, close to where the perch are, but they tend to move up early and late in the day. The northerns, best bet is fishing the flats, one great spot is the east shore from muskie bay to high banks resort, fish from 8-15′, you should run into some dandies there.

    Good Fishin’

    Jim,

Horseshoe, the Snag Hole, Moses, all are reporting walleyes and perch. The walleyes seem the most active early and late in the day on top of these bars. During the mid-day the are sliding off the edge, you can probably stay active if you move with them. The northern action has been good just about everywhere on the flats. The West shore from Sugar point to Stony point in the 10-13′ area is your best bet right now.

Let me know if you have anymore questions….

How much ice? On average that is. My only mode of on ice transportation fell apart so to speak, so if there is driving I’ll be happy. If not, I might be doing some hardcore walking!

Thanks again for all of your info!!!!!!!!

8-12″ just about everywhere I have been. I would be real careful about driving even this upcoming weekend. My guess is they will have light weight vechicles out there, but full size trucks….not me yet.

If you do drive stay away from the mouth of the mississippi, which is on the way down the west shore…..Good Luck.
