Hi. I have read a couple of posts about trolling cranks on Winnie. I have not had that much expirience on Winnie, so I was wondering if anyone could give some pointers. I don’t want to know anyone’s honey hole, just some general guidlines, etc.. I love trolling cranks on Milly and other lakes, just wondering if it’s basically the same thing??? Is there a basin – “no mans land” – bite? Or is it shoreline/contour related? Thanks a lot for any and all help. One more thing…. any reports? Seems pretty quite latley. Thanks again!

Hey Jason we just got back from a week on Winnie, i think i can help you. We spent the whole week trolling #5 and #7 shad raps. We did really well. Between 2 boats i’d say 125 is a conservative guess on the number of walleyes we caught. There are lots of 13-14″ fish in Winnie right now but the catch i wouldnt say was dominated by that size fish. We got alot of fish in the 16″ range and we had about 12 in my boat over 20″ with 23″ being the biggest. Depending on the time of day and wind we fished from about 10-14′. If you can get some wind it really got the fish going, and got the bigger fish got going also. I have too add that we were not on the water all day by any means either. The better part of the week was hot and dead calm so we didnt fish from about noon too 6 pm at all. The whole key for us was finding the baitfish. The area we fished was stacked up with young of the year perch and i think they were emerald shiners and they were very easy too mark on the graph. The area was nothing special as far as structure but the baitfish were there. So as far as colors just “match the hatch”. I have too add that we were up over July 4th and the trolling bite didnt happen for us. We go up every year this week and the trolling bite has always been there. And we go up again over labor day weekend and again the trolling bite hasnt happened for us. So i think the real hot trolling bite is on now but i dont think it will last really long. Maybe im wrong but thats been my expierience.
