Hey folks, for anyone going to Winni here’s a little report. I recently returned from a week long trip to Winni. This was my first extensive outing on the lake and the first time on the lake for my three buddies that joined me. We stayed at Williams Narrows resort in Cutfoot. Nice resort, with all the usual amenities and a well protected harbor. They even had a guide come in to give the folks who were staying there some pointers. To quote the guide “there are fish literally everywhere in this lake”. Yep, sure are, if only they could be caught! For the first half of the trip, the weather was great – for water skiing. Air temps were warm and the big lake was mainly flat with a breeze blowing out of the south. However, every day the wind seemed to get stronger. We focused mainly on the north end of the lake. When we ventured to some mid-lake humps around Salami bar, we marked fish everywhere, but couldn’t trigger a strike. Eventually, the first keeper was had by lindy rigging with a leech in the dugouts.
I think we caught the only fish in that area. We moved further up the shore, first to the Pigeon/Farley area and finally, Stony Point. As the wind picked up, the fishing got better, especially on Stony. Lots of boats were pounding Stony. Lindy rigs with leeches seemed to work best, but we managed some fish trolling cranks, anything silver worked. All the walleyes were in the 14-15 inch range and came out of 8-10ft. There were plenty of perch as well.
The last couple of days, the wind was really blowing and right down the gap. Seelye point and bay gave us some good action in the evenings. The biggest walleye caught on this trip was only 21”, but it was caught here. For anyone out there like me, who just can’t resist bass fishing, the outer edges of the bulrush in Seelye bay provided some good action for largemouth. Apparently, a lot of people never suspected there were largemouth in this lake, judging by the funny looks I got when told of this. In all, when the wind blew, fish were caught. We also saw, but didn’t try for, slab crappies being caught by some of the boats fishing in Cutfoot and Little Cutfoot. Happy fishing.
