We just got back from our annual trip to Winnie and it was another fun trip. On Friday it was partly cloudy with an light ESE wind. We were getting fish from 7-11 fow but most of the fish came from 8-10 feet. We stick to the same technique on this trip every year which is drifting or back-trolling 1/16-3/8 oz jigs with minnows. I say minnows because its usually shiners, but fatheads and rainbows work too. In the afternoon we made a trolling pass in 4-6 feet of water and found a few walleyes and Northerns willing to bite, but it wasn’t nearly as fast as the jig bite.
On Saturday it rained for most of the day. We slept in a little, slowly made breakfast, and eventually decided to head out. I’m glad we did because it will be one of those days I will never forget. The walleyes were snapping! The best depth again was right around 8 feet. At one point I told my buddy we are just going to keep back-trolling this break until we go 5 minutes without a bite and then we will turn back. Two hours later and 2 miles down the break we finally had to turn back. There were times on that run where we had doubles, fish on as soon as the jigs hit the bottom, and a couple times where we actually had to wait for that 5 minute mark.
From the size of the fish we caught, I’d say the lake is very healthy. We caught fish from 13-23 inches, with a couple people in the group getting some around 25. On both days we would have had some incredible tournament baskets with a limit of healthy 16-17 inch fish. The water temp was 56-60 degrees. Color of jigs didn’t seem mater. If there was any pattern, the brighter jigs seemed to work better when it was cloudy.
We’ll be back up in July for the MTT tournament.
