Duluth Ice

Well its been over a year but right now we have fish-able ice out from Duluth right now. I was out this morning and there is a good six inches of ice in most spots. I was out in 75 fow and still had plenty of ice. Got a few herring, and saw a few lakers and coho caught. There were about 15 houses out as of 10 am this morning. This ice has been fish-able for two days now. It is a little hairy near shore, where you break through, but its only a foot deep or less.

Although it is good ice right now, it may be gone in a few hours, you never know, so please use caution and always pay attention. If you do go out into deep water, bringing a boat with isn’t a bad idea.

Coho’s are biting on small jigs and waxies, or crappie minnows. Lake trout on your bigger gear with some meat on it. 40 feet of water is plenty to be in for herring and coho. I am not sure on ice conditions further up the shore so dont take my word on ice conditions past 21st ave east.

The most asked question by Duluth ice anglers is……

“Why are the rocks on the bottom moving”?

I was out there myself yesterday. Ice fishing superior has been high on my list for a long time. Got 2 lakers on my first attempt. One about 28″ and the other was 30″!!! Man does that get your heart pounding! And your drag smokin’!

Do you know of anyone that found a black North Face jacket? Mine fell out of my sled when I was heading out and was told by some people nearby that 2 guys grabbed it on their way it. That was around 2 or so.

Crazy. Did the winds do it in?

Let me restate that, all the ice is GONE! haha.

James, yeah yesterday i was out from 6 till 1130 and we had some waves coming under the ice, but the water in the holes was only bouncing up and down 3 inches or so. There were a few cracks out there, nothing to worry about when you have 7 inches of good solid ice. Then i guess last night, she really started to crack up and guys had to sprint off the ice. Then today we have a w nw wind, so she blew it all out. Sounds like a strong W wind for a few days now, so who knows when we will get back out there.

I did get one laker about 10 pounds on camera tho yesterday in 50 fow even tho they had lockjaw.

That sounds like WAY too much drama! I like my ice to be a little bit more, how should I say… stationary?

Look at the bright side. If they are not biting while vertical jigging, you could try trolling

The weather does not look favorable for at least 10 days. If it isn’t windy, it’ll be warm. I’m bummin now, and I just got my feet wet. Not literally though

Yeah it sure is addicting isnt it!? another month and who knows we may be trolling out there. I sure hope we get more ice tho. The lake is making a lot of ice right now but she is just blowing it to the east. I made a trip up the shore today, and the mcquade is fish-able, but the Marcum 625sd reported that there weren’t many fish in there lol! I only saw 1 looper the whole time i was in there. There have been some good reports coming off the river mouths for loopers.

As of a few hours ago there was too much ice to fish off the lester, the french was fishable tho, with some guys having success. Bobbers and hair jigs with a waxie have been producing best.

Fore sure, and the only cure is MORE!!!

Is there ice in Two Harbors that is fishable? I’ve heard that can be good as well.

Looking at the satellite photo, the ice isn’t gone for good, it split and moved several miles to the NE. With alot of luck, it could blow back in… Lake Superior

I heard that they are going to begin stocking like they did in the late 90’s. This should improve the looper action that we saw back then.

No there is no ice in 2 harbors right now. Yeah, but its going to be a big west wind for another day or so then a warm up so she forsure wont lock up for at least a week. Yeah we got some good MODIS shots today! How deep were ya when you got those two lakers? Were you one of the two houses out in 90 fow the other day? I was in 55 and marked quite a few and got some on camera.

Where did you hear they will increase stocking? Id be very surprised if that were true.

I actually walked to the south and out about a mile. I was in about 60 fow.

I heard on the other site from a member claiming to be with the stocking program. They weren’t going to stock more, they were going to stock bigger fish like they used to. Apparently they thought that the lakers were eating most of them when they were being released.
