Hi everyone. I have an opportunity to make a trip up to the big lake this weekend and wanted to know if anyone can provide some basics on how to target salmon from shore.

I would be around the general Duluth area, but able to drive to hit tributaries, etc.

Any advice on gear, rigging, and general areas would be great!

    Thanks!

When I went to school in Duluth we would go to the mouths of any of the rivers up the shore and cast for trout and salmon. You don’t need any special gear. A long rod that will allow you to cast as far as possible. We used to cast cast masters and had really good luck. We always seemed to do best at the Lester and the French rivers.

    Good Luck

Try at the harbor at Two Harbors. Fish both sides of the wall, but on a south, southeast, or southwest wind the inside is better. Longer rod if you have one with a lighter action. 6 pound line….I prefer crystal. Gold/orange Little Cleos, gold/orange kastmasters, gold/orange krokodiles lures. Silver/blue is good in any of the lures too. Spinners up to size 4, gold silver no hair or feathers.

Be sure to take a net with a longer handle if you do the breakwater.

if you want the pinks are in the rivers now. They are brutal to eat but it will provide you some action. If you catch a lake trout remember it has to go back immedately due to the season being closed. You may find a few kings around if your lucky. If they stocked em here that would be a different story. Good luck. I like a silver/blue spoon, either in the longer crockidile porfile or more of a round spoon.
