I got a cabin in herbster and am going up for a week of rest, relaxtion, and fishing. My brother and I normally fish for pike, but we are looking to try out the Brule and some other rivers like the Flag in search of trout and salmon. Are cohos or kings starting to run yet at all on the south shore, or have the lakers started to come in within shore casting distance? I was also wondering if anyone knows if alewifes come into the harbor bays in port wing, cornucopia, and bayfield in august as well, as theyre bring the fish in to feed on them. I will be using #3 and #4 spinners in florescent colors with silver, brass, and black blades, but Im unsure on what rapala colors to try other than the classic silver and black and siver and blue, so if anyone could help out with some other colors it would be greatly appreciated.

Salmon and Lakers will not be in the rivers. For those you will need to hit the Lake. I was just in Superior and 2 harbors sat and sunday. Got 4 king, 2 lakers, coho and a steelhead. I was runnin mainly planer boards with large granks and sticks. I hardly used my downriggers so if you dont have them its no bother. Also dont let boat size scare you, I have a 16.5′ with a 60hp.
Feel free to PM for questions. -MarkAugust 9, 2010 at 5:47 pm #891968Quote:

what time of year is best for salmon,Do you fish superior for salmon often?
TIAAugust 10, 2010 at 2:10 pm #892216How would a guy target kings near the south shore? I have been going to lake michigan for a while now, but haven’t been able to dial in on the kings on lake superior. fishing lakers is fun, but catching a couple of kings would definitely make the trip. Thanks for any info and good luck fishing.

time of year depends on water temps and food in the area. this is my second year on SUP and first year for Salmon. Last year I targeted Lakers. Also last year was a BAD year for Salmon in the MN West WI area. There were a lot of people asking where the salmon were last year.
Last year the water was much colder and the general concensus from everyone is that is why they never showed up. Now this year sounds like it is a better year than the rest from what I gather. Coho were in Duluth in late march, im not sure when the Kings came in and the pinks are getting to Grand Marais now North bound.
I follow Sup almost as much as Mille Lacs. Both have been good. I have been going to ML mostly as the fishing was HOT and is now starting to slow so I shift gears.
A great website to follow reports is http://www.greatlakesangler.com
Unfortunatley i will also mention fishingminnesota and lake state fishing have a few more people that report on superior than IDO… sorry guys Ive gotta get my fix of the Gitch somehow.Im really no expert, but have been following the info and some local friends with info as well. I seem to do alright and I bring fish home so im happy. feel free to PM or hook up for a trip. -Mark
