Those of you who are wondering about the smelt, later this week or this weekend it is going to happen. We have a big east wind today that will bring in warm water. I was out fishing coho on sunday and there were smelt jumping everywhere from 13 to 55 fow. My graph was lit up the whole time. There have already been some smelt netted but this big east wind will bring them in even better once it quits on thursday.

Was up to Ashland sunday night with a couple others. We seined by Anglers All and with a 25 ft. net we filled 11 pails in 2 hours. About one pail per pull. The crew from Anglers All was getting 4-5 pails each pull with there 50 fter. It started at dusk and we were on our way home by 11:00. Took me about 8 hours to clean 8 gallons yesterday.

    I assume a pail means a 5 gallon pail?
Using 25′ and 50′ nets, like minnow seines?
20″ diameter smelt nets with 8′ handles and Rubbermade trash barrels are long gone, aren’t they
    Good luck
    cheers

Now just recently the DNR has come out and said the smelt have to used for eating only. No using them for bait. There was a big article about it today in the duluth paper.

Did ok on park point last night. The big swells made it tough but we got smelt on every pull. Lots of people down there
