I will be up in the area May 11th until late August. What are the possibilities for fishing from a 16ft Lund? I have caught trout in Lake Michigan off of the power plants and harbors, but it doesn’t sound like those same fishing opportunities exist on the North Shore.

Do i need downriggers and a large set-up to catch trout/salmon on the North shore of Superior?

Don’t forget about the St. Louis River. Many walleyes and muskie to be had.

Not till mid june or july. Most of the fish you will get on planer boards(the mast and big boards work best) fish the river mouthes and mudlines. we alwys do better on the south shore early amnicon and brule river mouths are my favorite. fat raps work better for salmon and speed up some the other fish any stick bait works colors change daily like the river. Good luck
BEWARE ITS ADDICTING. and keep a close eye on weather and wind it changes in a hurry.

in mid may no you wont need downriggers. the lake trout and coho will still be hitting up top on planerboards. you should be fine in a 16 footer, thats what i have and i fish out there alot. just watch the weather and use your head. i haver done good gettin lakers a mile or so straight out of the duluth entry trolling x raps and such on boards.

No you don’t need them early but later I would say probably yes. Not that the water ever gets warm but the fish do go deeper, especially the Lakers. You could run pump handles and lots of guys run Dipsy’s, but then you’ll need the rods to handle them. You can find some cheap manual riggers on e-bay and always turn around and sell them if you don’t like it.
You’ll be fine in a 16’er. Just be careful, don’t take any chances and stay in close. Some of the best fishing is with-in half mile of the harbors.

I’m trying to figure out all these regulations. It looks so confusing to fish around that area! I’m almost intimidated to try it!

May is a good month to fish river mouths on Superior. Waterflow is high and warmer than the lake. Lakers and trout come in close. Good month to explore and cast from shore.

They’re not really that bad. As long as you’re o.k. with your fish I.D. you’ll be fine. Anyone in particular your concerned about? I’m sure someone here will help you out.

I’m going to be spending Memorial Day weekend in Duluth, Two Harbors, and Gooseberry Falls. I would like to get some fishing in, but have never been to the North Shore. I’ll be limited to shore fishing. I would like to shore fish the big lake as well as explore some trout streams. I’ve been reading the posts here and a few other places trying to gather as much information as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mid-May I think I would save the hassle and leave the boat at home. The upper rivers of the north shore should have some great steelhead fishing opportunities at that time.. I am sure the southern rivers will still have plenty of fish, but the upper stretches may be in the prime..

I was on the breakwater yesterday and stuck a nice 8 pound laker. Another angler had a salmon.
