North Shore

I was reading some old reports of steelhead fishing on the North Shore. A few of them were dated mid March. Can fish be found in the rivers that early? And if so, is the ice off the rivers up there yet? I want to get out and fish.

    Thanks

I was up the shore to Silver Bay yesterday. There are alot of guys ice fishing out from the Lester river. Several fisherman shore fishing near the mouth of each river I passed north of Two harbors. Not much ice north of the French river and a ton of brown water coming down the Knife and the Lester. Open water keeps creeping closer and closer to Duluth. Shouldn’t be long and we will be fishing the soft water again from the boat.

Not too many fish in the rivers yet, but I’ll post when I start to see the guys hitting them. I preffer to fish the river mouths from boat or shore and not “Combat fish” with the crowds in the streams.

The rivers farther up the shore are also a great bet for early season steelhead. I know they were really low as of last fall but some of the runoff should get them moving in soon. I posted this in another thread somewhere but you can’t go wrong with the Baptism, the Poplar, and the Cascade when it comes to spring fishing. The Poplar has been exceptional the last few years.

Jeremy, thanks for the info. I have one question for you. Is this week to early?

It might be a little too early for the streams farther up the shore. I do know the loopers are going pretty strong already though. I was going to get up there last weekend but plans changed. Let us know how you do if you get out.

I’m going up tommorrow, mostly because I have the day off and I can’t wait anymore. I may not catch or see anything. But I be up there anyways!
