I love to flyfish and have always wanted to try for salmon and steel head. Who, where, and when? Could anyone guide me to some answers?
    Thanks

Welcome Winkels, what area do you reside and recreate in?
We have to narrow things down a bit for you.
    cheers

That would help out a bit. Live in SE MN.(Eyota) Where trout streams are closer than lakes and the river. Which expalins the flyfishing.

If we get enough rain the trout and salmon should start their fall runs into the rivers along both the South Shore rivers like the Amnicon, and Brule as well as those in MN on the north shore Like the Lester, Knife, Sucker etc…Some are already being take at the mouths of them in the lake as there is not enough flow coming out of them yet for the fish to get up into them. Its been really dry here this summer and fall so far.

Thanks for the input! Generally how long does the run last? Do they use mainly streamers or egg sacks? I have read about guys using spinning reels on fly rods on the brule is that the common practice?
Thanks again for the responses! My buddy gave me the web site and said it was full of great people! From what I have read great people and a wealth of knowledge.

If you are looking for some good clean fun, grab your bass or walleye rods an extra spool or two of line and some stick baits and take a road trip to Sturgeon Bay. The Salmon are on fire in the channel and can be had by just casting. The window is somewhat short but there should be atleast a weeks more of unreal lite line action!!!

Heck spend a half a day on salmon and spend the other half chasing trophy bass, muskies or walleyes as they are all puttng on the feed bag.

Yes, many guys put spinning reels on flyrods but nowdays many rod makers are building 7, 8, 9 foot rods suited for casting from shore or drifting spawn sacks. I haven’t heard of or seen many guys using streamers, but have seen many guys with flyrods using bright orange egg imitation “flies”.

The Brule is full of lake run Browns right now and the others are coming. Watch the weather up here, the next big rain should be the trigger.

Probably the most popular steelhead setup on the streams is a 9ft 8wt. fly rod with nothing but monofilament on it. 6-10 lb test maxima is the choice of most. Another good option is a “drift” rod in that 8-10 foot range. They have shorter handles, like a fly rod kind of. Many people put a fly reel with mono again on these rods and drift spawn bags or yarn flies. The streams on the North shore are starting to produce a variety of fish!

Just a reminder…the Brule river in Wi is closed upstream of Hwy 2 now.
