Has there been much of any smelt run since the lamphrey was reduced and the salmon and trout returned?

Many of the “old time” haunts that provided us with great smelting are now posted “No smelting”. I thinks its a traffic thing. Then too with the up-tick in Lake Trout numbers and the King Salmon the smelt numbers have gone downhill over the years. A lot of whether people see a smelt run in some rivers depends on how much water the river is moving. There are a lot of factors.

In recent years I think those who drag seines off Park Point do ok and dip-netters might have a good night here and there but on the whole smelting isn’t what it was in the 60’s and early 70’s.

They poison the streams where the lamprey fry reside. The poison is specific to the lampreys.

Every year at this time I remember how much I miss eating smelt. It was a given when I was growing up.
