Looking to fill an open seat to fish Lake Superior for Lake Trout in the Duluth area. I’ve been out there once before a few years ago and had a blast!

Planning on walking out near 21st St. or Lester River area. Walking conditions sound good and I’m hoping to hike up to 1/2 mi if possible.

I have the fish house and an extra flasher. I also have a few heavier walleye rods that should work as well.

Looking to leave fairly early tomorrow morning from East Bethel. PM me if interested.

I wish you could join. Seat is still open. I can adjust my depart time tomorrow if anyone is interested.

If I didn’t make plans to snowmobile up to the cabin from the cities tomorrow I would be all over hitting Superior.

I made it out for a few hours and fishing seems good. Seeing lots of fish and broke off 2 big lakers. Picked up a couple coho and a few herring. If anyone wanted to meet me out here to fish, I could use a little help pulling the fish house

Finally. After 2 break offs on nice lakers and missed a couple others, this one came to the top side. It took two big runs and made it well into my line backing.

I’m guessing nobody is following this thread but here’s the big one of the day.

How deep are you fishing? Are they mostly relating to the bottom?

I fished 60-85′. Pretty much the same action all over. Most fish are relating to bottom. I’m keeping my baits at least 10-15′ off the bottom.

I can’t say I’m happy to be home. I could have stayed up there all week.

Overall it was a good trip. If I would have landed all the fish I hooked, I probably could have had 15 lake trout. I didn’t hear of any lake trout caught under 8 lbs. I did however catch one about 5 lbs.

Now I have to decide, Lake Superior next weekend or LOTW. I’ve been to LOTW twice already this year and did very well. Lake Superior doesn’t freeze very often so I’m leaning that direction.

Very very cool. If I wasn’t going to Winnie this weekend I might have asked to join you.

    biggill:

Is that considered boundary water??? Pretty sure you are on the MN side, I would be sure that the St. Louis is, not sure about the Duluth side of the lake though… I start spring break next week and might be able to sneak over there if you are not there for only the weekend… Saw pictures of Grant and he had a couple of pretty nice fish too!!!

LS is not a border water. There is a state border on the water so different rules and licenses apply for each side. My request for an open seat was for last weekend. Sorry.

I may be heading up again this weekend, but I have a few buddies that are interested. I highly recommend getting up there though. I can answer any questions you may have too.

What were you using for the lakers and cohos??? I live right by 21st and I’m thinking about going out tomorrow and trying it for the first time

Basically any of the classic laker lures were working. I was using a 3/8 oz cicada and a 3/8 oz buck tail jig tipped with cisco.

If you’ve never fished lakers before, it’s a must to have the following:

    40″+ mh-h rod
    Med size reel
10-12 lb test braid or mono. I suggest braid with a mono backing and leader.
At least 200 ft of line on your reel. These fish will easily go on multiple 100′ runs.

For cohos, light walleye gear will do. These fish are right under the ice in 10-80′. I caught mine on a small jigging rap.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

After watching today’s In Depth Outdoors show on lake trout off of Duluth, I’m pumped. I’ve never fished for them, but have wanted to for several years. I think I’m going to head up there Friday or Saturday. Are you going up there, Biggill? I see you live in Bethel. I’m in Lino Lakes.

Thanks for the good hints and advice on lake trout fishing up there. Two questions: 1. how thick was the ice the last time you were out if it was recently. 2. Is it best to use a 10 inch auger? I think you’ll say yes to that, but just wanted to clarify it.

I am hoping to head up again this weekend. Although I don’t think there will be an open seat this weekend. I’ll send you a PM if I happen to have one.

Looks like some snow this week and it could cause some trouble with the ice. I’m sure it’ll be the last hurrah for a while. Hopefully not for “years”.

I don’t need an extra seat this time, Biggill. Another friend and I are going up there. But, it would be nice to connect if we’re up there at the same time.
