I think we’ll be able to finally declare all MN lakes “ice free” in the next day or two!
As we ran out to our first spot early in the AM I kept seeing these large areas on the surface of the lake that just weren’t moving right with the surface of the water.
After about the 4th or 5th time seeing it I finally came off plane and turned around to go see what it was. Ice! And a good amount of it too. Water temps are still only 37 degrees in the AM on the surface (out of Grand Portage) so I’m sure that’s how these sheets of ice have been able to survive as long as they have.
I know I about froze to death on the long runs from one spot to the next. I came dressed for summer. What we got felt more like March!
So you didn’t jump in to cool off on this trip, eh?
Catch any fish?

Sure did. I finally got my 20# Superior Laker caught on a jig rod and Joel stuck a 42″ pike in a back bay casting X-Raps. It was a cold day on the lake but the fish we caught more than made up for it. Joel will have a full report come Monday following the holiday weekend.
And here I thought you were giving everyone the finger…until I saw that shale.

If I was directing that finger at anyone, or anything, it would have been the sheets of ice floating around the boat.
As it turns out the way in which I chose to hold that piece of ice was purely coincidental.
No wonder the wind off the lake was so darn cold a few weeks ago when we were riding the Harley around the U.P.
James – Was that really lake ice or ice from your cocktail? Both make great stories but one seems more believable
with 37 surface temps are you guys finding fish still close to shore or are they out in the basin by now?

We never caught a fish in more than 50′ of water. When we decided to go pike fishing in the afternoon we ended up catching as many lakers and steelies as we did pike… all in 5′ – 10′ of water. The water is very, very cold yet.

Scouts honor… that’s lake ice we found floating in big sheets out on the main lake. As Joel said, if we hadn’t seen it ourselves we wouldn’t have believed it. And if we didn’t have photos we would have shown it here. Floating ice on July 2 in MN? Crazy.
I could believe that. I was on it yesterday nothing was caught in the lake for me so I moved back into the Duluth Harbor/St. Louis River and we did alright trolling Sutton Spoons on three-ways. It was fun!!! Actually was catching walleyes. First time on the Lake. I will post more later. Have a good 4th of July.

That explains why the stink bait is not working
