When someone says north shore I just assume the whole area.
The North Shore refers to Superior’s shoreline. Get away from that and you’re dealing with the boundary waters.
From Two Harbors north you can find all sorts of lodging. Grand Marias is pretty busy all the time and things tend to get pricey. Little Marias, Beaver Bay, Two Harbors, Silver Bay all have great places to stay and keep you sort of in the center of the activity hub. Two Harbors is closest to Duluth if that is on your list of “to do” cities. Any of these towns will get you to the interior fairly quick with Hibbing, Virginia and Ely all being an easy two hour road trip.
Eating is at your beck and call. In Two Harbors one can’t go wrong at Due North Pizza. There is a darned good eating place in Castle Danger, 15 miles and 2 great highway tunnels north of Two Harbors. The Scenic Route between Two Harbors and Duluth has several eating places from casual to duded up and spendy. The retsaruant in Beaver Bay mentioned is a dandy plus most all of the larger motels and resorts have eating facilities that will leave you short on stomach space.
I’d suggest hibernating closerto Two Harbors since Grand Portage [Canadian border] is only 2 1/2 hours north and all highways leaving from Two Harbors for interior destinations are in very good shape. A trip to Ely and a visit to the International Wolf Center and International Bear Center are great places for kids and adults alike. A day in Duluth to see the Great Lakes Aquarium and the Imax are within walking distance of the famous lift bridge and the walk along the shipping cananl.
Two Harbors and Grand Marias both have breakwaters that can be fished as does the Silver Bay Marina. The Two Harbors Breakwater will set you out 1/3 of a mile in the lake with water about 75-80 feet deep at the end of a good cast. If you want particulars on lures, pm me.
The whole area up there is rife with history. Wildlife is every where so deer, bear and possibly a wolf or moose is a constant posibility. I’ve never seen or heard of a bored kid on the shore. Alwways something to do.
