Well i think we all knew it had to happen, the fishing would heat up sometime. I had the opportunity to take my grandpa out on the big lake to tangle with some trout and salmon. Hes an inland lake walleye guy, but i told him if he can hang onto a pole and just reel, he’d do just fine out there. haha. And reeling did he ever!
For 2 hours straight, all i did was hand him rods to reel in that had lake trout and salmon on the ends of them, ranging from 3 to 9 pounds. I didnt reel in a fish, I just kept re setting them and driving the boat as he cranked em on in!
The fish were very concentrated, in specific areas. Once you found a mud line you liked, the fish were about 1/5th of a mile into the mud. There wasnt much on the line itself, but they were holding close to it.
Minnow baits such as x raps, husky jerks and others in the 4.5 inch range were doing well. Colors had to be white or silver it seemed like…..no surprise here. Got nothing on spoons, all the fish came on minnow baits longlined behind a board at 120.
Was a fun morning to get out and finally do very well on the big lake, and even better that grandpa was there to share it with me! Looking forward to many more outings this summer as this is just the start!!
